Backyard Aquaponics Pty Ltd, is a leading edge aquaponics company based in Western Australia. Originally started as a means to provide information to people, who were interested in learning more about the subject, the company has now grown and changed quite a bit since those early days. The company has now become an amalgamation of many different people, who are passionate about aquaponics, about furthering the spreading of information, and about helping people with their own aquaponics systems.
In The Beginning
One of the original aquaponics companies in the world, we remember the days when there was only one or two websites about aquaponics, when there were no online discussion forums, when you couldn’t buy a book or DVD on the subject and the word aquaponics raised eyebrows because nobody had any idea what it was. So, we started an online forum, then we wrote the first book on aquaponics, produced the first DVD on the subject, and opened the first retail aquaponics display centre in the world. Then of course we began publishing the Backyard Aquaponics Magazine, the first glossy aquaponics periodical available.
The Backyard Aquaponics systems have become widely known as some of the best quality aquaponic systems available on the market. Ours are the systems other people tend to copy, which is great, we want people to copy our systems, we want others to have well designed, simple, well constructed systems which will give them positive experiences with aquaponics.
You can see some of the systems we’ve installed for clients here by clicking this link. This is only a small sample of the systems we’ve installed over the past 5-6 years, if you’d like to see a more comprehensive list they can be viewed on the forum.
The Backyard Aquaponics forum was started in 2006, it’s the original aquaponics forum that started interest in aquaponic online really rolling. Since then there have been dozens of new forums and communities started, some have come and gone, some still remain. The Backyard Aquaponics Forum is free, and always will be, it’s a place to learn and to share. Please come and visit the forum, sign up and become a member, it’s free and you be joining a friendly interesting and varied community of people from around the world with a wealth of experience in different areas of aquaponics.
We began producing the Backyard Aquaponics Magazine in 2007. The magazine is filled with interesting facts about aquaponics as well as systems, fish species, reviews articles on almost every aspect of aquaponics that you can imagine.
We’ve been running workshops every month for the past
The team at Backyard Aquaponics are here for one reason, because they are passionate about aquaponics. The team really stretches further than the information I can post here, as so many different people have helped the company advance to where it is now, over the years. However, this is how it stands at the moment with the core team working on a daily basis.
Joel First started the company Backyard Aquaponics back in 2005, he has written the first book on aquaponics, filmed and produced a DVD and a number of video segments. He has appeared on National television and been written about and published in numerous magazines and newspapers.
|Faye joined the company soon after it started in 2007 and became a partner in the business shortly after. Faye is a horticulturalist with a passion. She has an enormous garden broken into many different rooms with different themes. Her garden has been open to the public for fundraising events and open gardens. |<span >At the time of updating this webpage Nat has been with us for over a year. Nat’s been a keen fish keeper for as long as he can remember, and his unit is filled with aquariums with all different types of fish. He breeds fish and small crustaceans for the aquarium industry and has many different aquaponic systems out on his balcony as well as at his parents house. Nat thinks this is his “dream job” because he gets to do what he loves AND gets paid for it.|
Peter Has been with Backyard Aquaponics since the start. He helped build Fayes system 5-6 years ago and since then he would have installed probably 200 systems or more. We often Joke that he’d be the most experienced aquaponics system installer in the world, but jokes aside, he would be. John (on the right) is Peters right hand man on installs, he wouldn’t have done quite as many installs over the years but he especially loves the installs where overnight stays away are required, or any trips past nice bakeries or taverns.
<span >Sue has only been with us for a couple of months now, but don’t let that short employment history fool you, she’s been a member of the Backyard Aquaponics Forum<span > for over three years. She has had her aquaponics system up and running for over 2 years now and she’s tried pretty much everything to do with raising feed and animals either at her home or out at her farm. A wealth of knowledge about all types of growing systems including black soldier fly larvae, worm farms, wicking beds, raised beds and aquaponics.
Dave has been our graphics man for many years now, his work is amazing, he can turn words and a few photos into a thing of beauty. Anyone who’s read the Backyard Aquaponics Magazines would know Daves work well, though probably not have any idea of who he is. He makes the behind the scenes magic.
