Backyard Aquaponics Forum

forumA place to share experiences

In 2005 and early 2006 hobby aquaponics was still pretty rare, especialy within Australia and there were a lot of enquiries from people asking questions about the specifics of aquaponics. Rather than responding directly to individual enquiries, I had begun posting enquiries to an online discussion forum at www.aquaponics.com, after posting the enquiry I'd respond publically there so that in future similar enquiries could be forwarded directly to the online information.

This worked well for a while but it didn't give me the flexibility I wanted to try and make a more complete information source and community environment, so I decided I'd have to start my own. The Backyard Aquaponics Forum was started in early 2006.

From quite early on the forum became very popular and started to expand quickly, the community atmosphere of the forum was very obvious, friendships were born, relationships flourished, people shared and helped each other, and this community atmosphere began to expand and grow.

Group get togethers started to come about. The first was in late 2006 in Perth when a group of interested forum members came to my house to see my aquaponic systems, to talk aquaponics, share some food and drink, and generally just to have a good time.

Over the last few years a number of aquaponic get togethers have happened across Australia in most states and territories. It's not uncommon for people to travel interstate to go to get togethers, and often an interstate visit from a forum member might be the catalyst to call a get together.

The forum is a great way to get started, you can scan through members systems or ask the many experienced forum members questions about your own specific interests. It's a lot of fun participating in the online discussions, and we are always having activities and competitions like the photo competitions, giant vegetables, and limerick competitions.

There's a giant vegetable competition running at the moment and the winner will be voted by members of the forum, with a first prize of $250.

The forum is definitely the best place for people to start on their quest for information about aquaponics, it's a vibrant passionate community of like-minded yet diverse individuals who are always willing to help others. If you haven't been there yet, then please drop in, join up, and say hello, it doesn't cost anything and you'll get to meet like-minded individuals.
