Are you human?: such a leading q...

I'm a newbie. I've been doing some reading and I have two questions:

1.) Why are bell siphons the norm, rather than loop siphons, which are mechanically simpler?

2.) In order to get the bed to drain fully, does one have some mechanism for stopping the flow of water in, like a float valve or something? Or is it just controlled by an inflow/outflow differential?

Thanks!!
