I am adding 20 litres of water a day to my system and still cant seem to keep a good water level in the fish tank. The tank and GBs are well shaded but with the ambient temp at around 40 degrees at present (and its not summer yet), I would like some ideas on what I could do to try and reduce evaporation. I have learnt that fish dont like great changes, ie dont add 100 litres at a time, and the Barra also didn't like having a large thick poly foam placed over the tank. (They stopped eating), I only had it on for a few days, should I have given it a longer go.Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Jane

Wickham, yes, I'd persevere with the tank cover - I've certainly seen other tanks covered and the fish happy, and yes some of them were barra.

Let a little bit of light in. Fish don't need a lot of light (certainly barra aren't to keen) but they do need to be able to detect a day/night cycle occuring.

Other options

- shade sail above your veges (use a white one so all light wavelengths get through)
- protect from hot/dry winds as these evaporate an enormous amount of water.

Is it a 1000L tank you have Jane? I wouldn't worry about adding one to two hundred litres into that at any one time. It's going to be a drag topping it up every day.
