Can you please explain what the characteristics of the offspring of these breeding pairs will be like?

What's the sex ratio?

What's an average weight at say, 6 months?

What is the temperature range they can live in?

tanks,

The prices for breeding pairs may be justifiable but the males only $4.each and are probably fingerlings.

I'm better off getting the legal blue tilapia for $1 each if I want all males. If I'm willing for mixed gender, I can get them for 25 cents each. Of course I have to drive to get them but it is only an hour and a half from me.

My new license is supposed to come in in June, I think I should have had it by now. I may have to stop off at the Wildlife and Fisheries building and check. It would be worth investing a little more to get a better fish profile because all Tilapia in Louisiana need to be licensed anyway. I may need to move to Texas or Florida!

If you can get the licence easily, you are probably in a fine place. Here it isn't overly hard to get the permit for other types of tilapia but my property wouldn't meet the requirements so I'll just stick with the legal type which probably are not as nice for production but at least they are legal for me and cheap.

You probably saw my questions of the breeder above. He told me he didn't know any of the answers. That doesn't bode well to me. Anybody can breed tilapia, but it's harder to breed good ones.

Here's another place to look for tilapia in the usa: http://diyaquaponics.com/classifieds/index.php?catid=1

For Tilapia ,, read the link below ,, this guy really knows what he is doing ,, I learnt a lot from him. Just read the web-pages , the site is FILLED with great information. If a group gets together it may well be worth importing some of his stock , depending on legal / quarantine hassles.

I picked up my Tilapia Permits today... My 09 and my 2010. My 09 permit was on the agents desk since January. He was unsure of mine as I wasn't a Fish Farmer. I am the only permitee in Louisiana to have one for Personal consumption. I explained to him I needed my permit so I can order my fingerlings. He gave me a copy of the new rules. FIVE FULL PAGES! Seems I even need a survailance system for my fish Aquarium   I guess I'll hook the house alarm back up. I mentioned ordering fish on ebay and he told me not to get caught doing that right now. Seems some Tilapia were somehow liberated in Port Sulphur Louisiana. In the River Delta which is really bad news. Seems there are a lot of agents trying to contain it, And I wish them success, but they would probably have a better chance of recovering a sugar cube. For me to go pickup my fingerlings I have to notify the Secretary of the LDWF in writing within 24 hrs with a map of the route and have 6" letters on both sides of the vehicle that say LIVE TILAPIA .(as well as $10K available credit) And just as before they can come inspect my aquarium anytime unannounced.
Well I got my permit :? May go pick up some fish next week.

I feel your pain BB. It's been a month and a half and I'm still waiting for the state's biologist to come inspect my tank.
