Here is a picture of a u-siphon that I made. It's pretty simple really.

I did drill holes in the input pipe on the bottom, and I capped it off. I also put a bit of black corrogated pipe around it as a gravel guard.

It works pretty well so far. It has similar flow rate issues to my bell siphon in that if the flow is too heavy it will just dribble on instead of stopping cleanly. If the flow is too light it won't fire reliably.

I think the key is the reduction in pipe size on the output. It goes from a 3/4" to a 1/2" which I think helps it build suction and fire.

I used siphons for years between glass aquariums..
They work well, but have the weakness of needing regular service..
I find that they "block" with air locks, and thus you need to regularly remove air..
I could not accurately say why, but I think it is because there is a general negative pressure (sucking) and this encourages small air bubbles to form, and build up, first slowing the flow and then stopping it..
I had clear tubes and so could see the air lock forming. :upset: ..
