Without a microscope this is just a guess but I think it's probably a bacterial mass but it could be something else too :dontknow: .

Do you think the solution is still to replace the net with k2? Do you think cleaning the filter tank with bleach will remedy this?

Ordered 4 cu ft of k2 for one Static upflow filter (SUFF?)

Would like to add a few gate valves to bypass filter tanks individualy for cleaning to not stop the water flow. I have 1/4 turn valves which are a tough to turn (2 inch) What do you think of these gate valves?

http://www.masterspapartsonline.com/pro ... -sxsp.html

Nothing is really under pressure so I think the above valves would be ok. Looking for a second opinion or alternate valve that would be easy to operate.

I can't advise you on the gate valves, haven't used any up to now but they do get used by some people here and I've noticed them a lot on the Koi forums.

I think the Static Upflow Filter won't let as much of the slime through. I think what does get through (If any) will be broken up more and I think you'll be able to give it a better cleaning to knock down the bacterial levels so that should help extend the cleaning interval as well. You could probably even use a garden hose and chlorinated tap water to spray the media down once the filters drained (kind of a last resort that would kill some potentially beneficial bacteria in the SUF, but the fish, the plants and the bacteria in the grow bed won't be affected since it's only in the Static Upflow Filter).

If you're still having problems after installing this then I'd start to suspect a plumbing problem.

It looks like stuff I get in my IBC from time to time. I have it in one at moment but not others.
But to be honest I don't really do much about it. But it is a winter thing for me (you are in summer).

I think it comes from left over food etc. And when you touch it with a stick it just disintegrates.
If case I have seen it very common in ponds. Suspect it is a form of bacteria as Scotty suggests.

As you have goldfish you can probably get by initially by feeding less.
Also if it is prevalent in your fish tank try vaccuming it up with a siphon pipe.

Increasing circulation will often clear it as well - a slightly higher capacity pump.
(on one of mine I just have a split return of balance not going to grow bed)

3 questions:
What are your ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH like
what is your home water like - chlorine (and/or chloramine etc)?
How often and what are you feeding ?
