Hi all
I have just started a ibc chop and flip. I am doing a fish less start, until all my readings are good then I will be putting some fish in. My problem at the moment is the PH will not come down it’s reading high 7 to low 8, I have been using hcl acid to bring it down and it comes down to 6 then the next day it’s back up
I am using blue metal gravel would this be part of the problem

It's the carbonates in the water.

Just leave it, the bacteria prefer a slightly alkaline environment, so will develop better if the pH is up around 7.5-8.0

There is no need to drop the pH, don't be in a rush to do it, you will still achieve good plant growth at a pH of 7.5 or 8.0 and it will come down naturally over time once you add the fish, then you'll wish you still had some carbonates in the water.
