Hi,

I was just analysing the University of Virgin Islands commercial aquaponics report

There seems to be an approximately $7000 per unit price error in the calculations in Table 1, am I correct or am I missing something?

I didn't do a lot of reading just crunched the numbers and that's what it looks like to me. The unit price looks like it should be around 20,684 vs the listed amount of 13,780. A difference of $6,904. That's as far as I went.

I'm thinking maybe there's just an error in one or more of the costs/extensions... for example orchard netting probably cost $0.17 per square yard or meter rather than $17? (I think it's about $0.35/yd now?)

I think you're probably right about the netting since the price winds up close to the difference.

Thank you, that makes more sense, I will add updated prices, however I am just making a preliminary database.
Been away for a while, I'm now back working on my model.

If you know of any other commercial reports other than SRAC Publication No. 5006 and the references, please feel free to share and I will implement their analysis in my model.

Old Prospector - If you're thinking of building a netting filter you might find an up flow filter easier to manage and almost as cheap if you can find plastic bottle caps.

Don't know about bottle caps, but am willing to learn.

I, use a plastic ribbon similar to

BACTI-TWIST: 100/BLACK - 1-CUBIC FT

But the type I get is Free, just haul it away.

The advantage of the bottle caps is that you can clean them by agitating them with air... They basically float on the surface and all the water passing through is filtered of solids before it flows out over a top exit. Periodically you would lower the water level and/or block the exit and then agitate with air. This allows trapped solids to be released and flushed out via a drain. See Dasboot's system (Crappy Basil Growers are Us) thread for a few pictures.

The idea is to have good flow through the bottle caps without creating open channels where solids can pass through unimpeded.
