normally a tin roof will suffice, but a few ppl are building their house ontop of their tanks...which I think is a great idea.
precast slabs can be used to cover a tank and give a building slab to continue with if you so desire.

If you utilised and designed with passive solar principles surely you'd be able to use the tank for thermal effect as well??

do you have any problems with seepage or runnoff into the tank where the roof is joined? or is this not an issue for most tanks?
I'd love a fully buried (dirt on top) pair of tanks in my backyard, one for rain and one as the big sump I need. I hadn't considered it was feasible let alone using concrete until now.
What are the downsides you can see?

I see it as capital gains... everybody will want rain water tanks, and it wouldn't be hard to adapt. I do fear the cost though.
Besides it'll be enough of a challenge to move my AP setup and fill in the holes without worrying about those tanks.

Rope: are you mocking my obviousness? ;-) I do like to be thorough ;-)

100 years is not very long, think of the structures (ie bridges) in your city made of concrete, they withstand much more extreme conditions than a lowly old tank.

Perhaps not the best example right now :

I-35W Bridge collapses:

and the Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-35W_Miss ... ver_bridge

This was a major, 8 lane interstate bridge in Minneapolis, MN, USA that collapsed this summer, killing 13.

It was the steel that failed not the concrete.
