Had a fantastic week and showcase!
The students harvested fish, showed their systems, gave tours to parents, staff and other community members, got interviewed for local paper, sold tomato plants grown from seed, had a BBQ with beef grown on our farm.
We smoked trout and it was delicious.

Sadly, we could probably never do that here. Growing plants- yes. Using a knife to prepare fish to eat-no. We actually had a 8 year old suspended from school here for "shooting" a classmate with a water pistol, which I believe was empty. We had a team mate of my son back in '97 suspended for a week for having a filet knife in the TRUNK of his car...in a tackle box. The zero tolerance also has zero common sense.lol

Agree 100% with Chris, its sad it can't be the same here. Maybe that is why all the Aussy's grow up to be so good at this stuff. In school I think the best we ever did was making solar cookers to make hot dogs outdoors using sunlight. Thank god for boyscouts and family who took me camping and fishing as a child. I do know most educators would love to do what you're doing but it would only work in a private school with very forward thinking. Or possibly the teacher could prepare the dish at home and even then I doubt the school would allow the students to consume it for fear of lawsuits etc.

On that note I hope your students appreciate it, and would it be ok for a couple old guys from the US to come take your class?

Also the parents and news paper etc I hope this means you get more funding for future AP too. What we do have here is community gardens and education centers where an educator or volunteer could maybe repeat what you've done.

I used to carry around my little satchel of knives at school when we had hospitality, it was also a requirement that we bought our own knives.

It's more the power tools I was surprised they let us use, but it's the best way to learn sometimes. I was using a lathe in class once, and I sent a chisel across the room and into the wall, but I haven't used the lathe in such a bad way since.

Looking good Jay! How were the students with killing the fish?

I wonder if they have a cafeteria, and if they use normal food preparation and eating methods... or do they smear butter by hand... and tear sangers into halves.... very sad..
But, when frustration surfaces, the kids run home and return with an uzzie? ??

Back OnT... we saw tyres at one stage .... were they used in the project..?

The students were fine - one in particular was really into it.

No tyres weren't used - they were lying around.

Delivered an IBC system to a students house - he got the other unfinished IBC system so we are discussing wether to join them or have 2 separate systems (trout and perch). Still have to deliver rocks and setup pump and pipe work.

Getting ready to make a bathtub DWC - have to play with levels returning to sump - will it be okay to have bottom of bath return or should I make exit high up tub? The problem would be the bathtub plug would be a little below the other sumps water line

This is great! I just stumbled upon this and had a similar idea myself. It's not quite to this scale, but I have built an IBC system for a local high school. I'll be installing it in a week or so in their chemistry lab. Hopefully it goes over well and I can do more systems for other schools.

What are some of the lessons you are teaching with the system? Obviously there is the nitrogen cycle, plant life cycles, plant and fish anatomy. Another person told me to incorporate all of the ph, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings into a statistics lesson. What are you doing with it?
