Well that sucks. Sorry Gordon. Will you be able to call this retirement? Can't wait to see what you build.

Thanks Brian.
I can't retire just yet, I don't have any money saved up after only having part time work for the past 7 years, and still a fair way off being old enough to get a pension, so I'll just have to see what I can find.

I'm glad you still can make a small income stream from the aquaponics system. Good luck Guna!

5 harvested on Friday night, average over 1.6kg.

The weather is warming up, so I've been running the chiller for the past week, and with up to 35C forecast, I'll need to be running it every day until I get the remaining ~80 out.

The 2247g trout weighed 1944g after gutting and cleaning, and was 52cm long.

Those are fantastic weights. The weather at this time of year is crazy and here in Perth we’ve averaged around 28C over the last 4-5 days but it’s cooling down a little so mine might last a little longer.

It's a UNIKA, it is pretty good, but you have to observe the one seal per 2 minutes rating, otherwise it doesn't seal very well.

Great fish Gunna :headbang:

I've had to back off feeding my guys, so I'm not expecting any thumpers like yours.

Can I ask if you freeze them can you smoke them after defrosting or should you smoke the fillets before freezing? This is my first journey with trout and I’d prefer not to stuff up too many

I don't smoke mine, and haven't read up on it at all, so I'm afraid I can't offer any advice about that.

Thanks joblow, I've backed off feeding too, feeding a mix of 6mm trout pellets and 8mm native fish pellets that have lower protein, and less than they will take for quite a few months now, so that they aren't all really huge. However clearly it hasn't slowed growth too much for many of them!

It's a shame you have to reduce feeding, but it has to be done. The growth hasn't been too bad here either, the greedy few are quite large, but they still won't be setting any weight records when they're harvested.

I think the low overnight temps have been the main reason for my high ammonia problem, the fish tank could also do with a good clean out, and that will be done straight after I harvest this batch of Trout.

I'll will take the fish tank offline, empty it and pressure spray the inside, then wash it with food grade 35% Hydrogen Peroxide ready for the next batch of fingerlings.

I don't bother cleaning my FTs at all, there is plenty of biofilm on both of them, and that helps use up nitrates, and I suspect also provides surface for nitrifying bacteria, so should be of benefit in reducing ammonia, so long as you have plentiful Oxygen.
