How to reduce Nitrate the easy way

Leave the hose running for a 500% water change

I usually tie something around my wrist when ive got water running but neglected this time

It was my small system with only 6 fish in it so hoping no damage done the beds need a clean out and replant so probably good time to do it .

oops.

I use a tap timer if I am doing a manual fill. I seem to move on to doing six other things and forget the water is running :-)

So I'm not the only one who discovered this method??? Oh yeah, I need to got turn the water off!!!
Seriously,
I think you'll be fine. I've done this about three or four times.

I just recently added a timer like Brian, and about 15 minutes is usually all I need, for I too fall victim to all the little things that call my attention along the way, and then, water sneakily keeps going, wanting to be free from those cramped spaces. The good thing is that I top up from a barrel, so I have a limited amount of water that I can lose, but i have overflowed a time or two. I'm happy with my timer. :thumbright:

Yep my timer got shifted to another part of the garden

Times like this are good reminder to do the basic maintenance

Check for

Dead / sick fish

Build up waste in fish tank / sump

In my system sump waste can build up around pump and if the power goes off when it comes back on the sudden suck of the pump can jam it with fish waste / plant roots ect (pumps getting old about 6 yrs now its a Laguna 3500)

Plant roots blocking gravel guards

Plant roots growing down growbed outlets

Clean out beds and deal with Slugs

Check back up systems / spare pumps so they are ready to go RIGHT NOW
