Very nice.

1. What are you using as a medium?
2. How deep is the water in the pipes?
3. The thin pipes is that the water in or air?
4. Could you give a run down on the pipe setup?

Thanks this is making me think.

1. Course Vermiculite
2. i run the water to about 5mm up the net pots till i get good root formation
then lower the water level as the roots develop
3. thin pipe(4mm drip line) is for water, no air is injected however i have the water flowing about 1-2 liters a minutes

tube is 100mm PVC feed by 4x4mm drip lines drain via 19mm black poly water line.
the black pipe is connected to the 100mm via a item called a top hat grommet which uses a 19mm barbed fitting, there not bad and can handle quite high pressure so i'm told!

below is a drawing of how i've set up the tubes

Thanks for detailed response, Olley. Looking forward to seeing yr system in more detail - currently viewing on a smartphone with a pretty small screen so pics are hard to see. I'm interested in filters now since I've been working on my own ones for the past couple of weeks. In principle I think they're supposed to do the same thing as yours ie churn up the sand. Have you heard of ruffle filters before? Having put all mine together now I see how important pressure is in this kind of filter. At present the water is only really trickling through them so I'm not sure how effective the biological filtration I'm getting is. :/ it is making the water cleaner, tho, so it wasn't a total failure.

hey man just looking over your filter, not bad it would appear your filtering via gravity alone?

with the Bacterial problems have you looked at De-Tox carbon filters?

Because your filter is a kind of trickle(particulate) filter, slow flow is best so dont worry too much about the volume of water but you could have some anaerobic areas so you may need to keep an eye on that!

Thanks this help a LOT.

Do you use the 4mm pipe to know how much water you are delivering?

I really appreciate the detailed answer that you have given me.
