That's about the timeline... you should see some nitrites very soon... especially if you dosed again with more ammonia...

So it appears I have begun cycling... Nitrite spike and nitrate readings. Ammonia has dropped slightly.

Unfortunately, due to a very drastic change in my circumstances, I am selling this system to the first person with a reasonable offer.

Pickup only, Terrey Hills Sydney NSW $600 ONO includes:

3 x 40cm deep growbeds
1 x Full IBC Fishtank
1 x 60cm deep sump
12 x Bessa Blocks
2 x Hardwood sleepers
1 x 1000 l/h pump
1x Bulkhead fitting installed in one growbed that was used for cycling the system - You can set this up for any of the 3 types of siphon/CF/timed FD
5m outdoor heavy duty extension cable
prepared but not installed SLO
approx 3m of 90mm pipe
Enough gravel for 2 growbeds
Anything else related to the system that I have either installed in it, or sat near it excluding any of my tools.

Thankfully some drastic things only seem dire at first. Glad to read that you could keep your system.

Did another water test today, only ammonia, ites and ates as I don't care about ph at this stage and my ites have spiked up to 5+ and ates are up to 20. Ammonia is dropping steadily to somewhere between 2 and 4 from around 8. Once i get ammonia and ites to 0 I'll introduce some test goldfish.

Turns out what I thought was duckweed is azolla. Threw it out of the tank.

Starting to get some shoots off some herb seeds I threw in a few weeks back. 2 types have sprouted... don't remember what they are. I also planted a 3rd type and some peas but they haven't popped up yet.

The system won't be sold but it will be relocated(alongside me and the family) interstate so I've emptied my fishtank as I won't actually be plumbing it in... just going to run the sump>GB>sump system until the move and then set it all up properly later.

I have now rebuilt my system and am cycling.

I have no pics of the build and it's not quite finished, I only have 2 growbeds running thus far.

Thing I did differently this time:

1. Plumbed the FT in straight from the word go and set up a 90mm SLO.
2. Built the system only 1 bessa block high off the ground and dug the sump in deeper.
3. Used a ramp of bessa blocks and hardwood sleepers to make the job of filling the growbeds much easier. I shoveled it into the wheelbarrow, then ran the wheelbarrow up the ramp to the top of the GB and tipped it in. Saved having to shovel a second time. The gravel was clean enough so I didn't wash it. Water was a bit cloudy but is running clear now and I've sat some cloth under the GB inlets to catch any fines.
4. My 3 GBs will be inline rather than a staggered pattern. This is just because I have a more level location and more space than at my old place.
5. I used a little bit of urea for ammonia. I'm only at 1ppm ammonia and I decided to cycle with 9 goldfish instead of a fishless cycle. I'm hoping the goldfish will live when I introduce my SP but I don't particularly mind. I might move them if I'm feeling bad about them being eaten or whatever.
6. I'm using a 90mm pipe all the way from SLO to GBs and utilising the 90deg elbow as zsazsa has in his thread http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/vie ... =18&t=9276

I still have to set up my 3rd GB and plumb it in. When that's done I'll probably need to buy a new pump as my 1kl/h $39 special from big B won't cut the mustard. I'll probably use my current one to run water from the sumps to some strawberry towers.

Got a nitrite reading today... almost cycled yay. Hope the goldies make it

I have found some aphids on my lettuces... only about 6-10 so far and I'm killing them as I find them. Hopefully I can keep them under control.

I have a biopod style bin made up and the maggots are starting to get quite numerous... In my household we always have heaps of leftover food so I'll have plenty to feed the fishies.

Keep an eye out for ants, they farm aphids tenaciously! All of your best efforts could be foiled by them.

Haven't seen any ants, just the odd aphid here and there... I'm just squishing them as I see them...

lettuces have gone gangbusters and my water went green, ammonia and nitrites went through the roof

I lost 2 goldies. ammonia has dropped down now but my nitrites are still high.

Waiting for them to drop to 0 and then I should be ready for my SP. I'll test it by spiking the ammonia and seeing how long before ites and amm are back to 0.

Anyone know how best to dose with urea to create ammonia immediately? I was kinda just throwing some in the sump every day before the goldies but I never really saw a noticeable movement in ammonia until I added the goldies and started feeding.

Urea wont fully convert to ammonia.. for a couple of days...

Adding it daily would have given you the large ammonia spike...
