Wow, Dave those are nice. How well does charcoal work for the GB?

DrLuke, when doing a CF system, how does the water actually circulate in the GB should it be filled from the bottom? If you fill from the top and drain from the top, do you get enough circulation in the media?

It seems to be working OK for me, have been using it for more than a year. It floats so if you want a flooded bed it might not be appropriate - I am using mostly net pots with charcoal in them, in a kind of DWC mini-trough like those shown.

If your drain were say a vertical pipe with holes in it that let water in from all levels then that should allow water at the bottom out as well as the top. I have a constant flood 70 gallon stock tank in the driveway, that one is filled from the top, and the drain is at the bottom. Outside the stock tank there is an elbow to set the water level above the outlet. For small systems it should all work out OK regardless, adding compost worms would help keep things from getting too stagnant.

You do get enough circulation, because the movement of water around the media stirs things up. But you will need to put ur grow bed inlet as far away as possible from your grow bed outlet/drain. On larger beds people use distribution pipes/manifolds at the inlet to spread the water out more evenly and ensure good circulation.

Oh yeah... And DDs idea of outlet near bottom with an external s bend setting water level would also work.
