long time lurker, first time poster....

i'm blown away by the amount of valuable feedback and info on this site!! an amazing resource..

we have a very small sunny courtyard space to work with, and hope to set up a system consisting of a IBC fishtank and a growbed consisting of either a plastic pond ala (http://shop.watergardenworld.com.au/cat ... cts_id=671)
or an old spa

here is a little sketchup model I made to visualise the system

Image

looks ahem a lot more spacious in the sketch

the IBC under the stairs will be the fish tank and the one on the deck will be the growbed...

I would like to run this system as F&D or CF

there is about a 3 metre height difference from the middle of the IBC to the top of the grow bed.. so i figure a pump with a head of 5 metres should be enough right?

we intend to enclose the FT to protect it from the sun and make it look purdy...

so whaddya reckon?? are we crazy??

What is the goal of the system? It's not the most economical or green to pump water up that high, but if these aren't the goal there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

IBCs are nice because they liners are made of food grade HDPE, so they're safe for edible fish and plants. You'll want to find out what kind of plastic your potential growbed is made of (and whether or not it's food grade), then decide if you're comfortable with the leaching potential (if it exists). My guess would be the pond in the link wouldn't be suitable. It's pretty difficult to find safe materials unless your using IBCs or blue barrels which were designed to safely hold food/beverage.

Ok my 2c's worth...

You are crazy... as some said... Not very economical to run.. a Huge Height.. More power to pump to the 3-5m height..
Try to have a simpler system..
