Well the growth is going really well..my PH has dropped to around 6.0-6.4 which has been alright for the plants but im thinking maybe I should add some shells in a sock to slowly increase the PH towards 7? any thoughts on that?
The water has cleared up nicely.. i never washed any of the gravel or expanded clay but after a few weeks it has all cleared up by itself... not really worth washing the gravel in my opinion unless there may be harmful stuff on it.

I got a 30L/h air pump (see image below) to go with my smaller AC/DC backup air pump.. it draws 25W but seems worth it since it is better to have too much air than too little... or at least thats the feeling that I have gotten from reading on this forum. Also I am running the system CF so there should be no shortage of oxygen for plants and fish alike.

Hey Tom, interesting to read about your expansion ideas with the NFT style on the wall, but mate, I reckon in a few weeks when the plants in the bed really start taking off you'll be struggling to get down the side.

Im already struggling a bit and eventually when I have the NFT and the strawberry towers on the other side where it is 10cm narrower it will become a case of shuffling sideways..but it was all the space I had to work with
it is amazing what you can fit in 6m x 2m... Im looking forward to wading through a jungle in there :headbang:

Well I have made an enclosure for the new air pump and tested it out... i probably didnt need to make an insulated enclosure after I realised that most of the sound coming from the pump was coming from the air outlet and that sound dissapeared as soon as the air hoses went under the water... I think the 30l/h pump is actually quieter than the little backup 5L/h pump. I only have air stones for the 2 hoses from the little air pump and am waiting for the 6 air stones for the larger pump.. when i turned it on it made so many bubbles it looked like a spa ( i think that will be better when I get the air stones though). 8)

Looking at that third photo, I would be little concerned about the air pump over-heating. They can get quite warm, and with all that foam packing around it, and no air circulation, you may be asking for trouble.

Just a thought.

yeah although it does look more packed in than it actually is ( there is about an inch space between the pump and foam all around.. also cut a hole in the top piece of foam where the pump has its air intake spout thingy. Although since the pump is so quiet anyhow i think i will just remove the top foam piece and then it should have plenty of air. :thumbright:
