Hi everyone! I'm new to aquaponics, to start off with here is my small little system! (20g/75L with a 40L growbed)

The growbed is a continuous ebb and flow with a bell siphon. Currently the bed holds about 2.5 gallons of water, and the bed cycles about 9 times an hour.

Right now I'm still doing my fish-less cycling and currently waiting for nitrites to drop, so I'm almost ready to add fish.

So the plan is to use tank as a display for goldfish, and the growbed for growing basil, chives, and parsley. I'm going to start out with 3-4 of the cheap goldfish but hope to upgrade to some form of fancy once my system is nice and established. I also plan on planting the aquarium with 3-4 aquatic plants in addition to the herbs that will be grown above.

I also realize that my growbed is about half the size it needs to be, but I assumed since a lot of people try to optimize a system that a 1:2 growbed:fishtank ratio would be okay, so long as I don't over stock.

Anyway let me know what you think!

Looks good!

Just make sure the shelves you've got it on are strong enough, and you've got enough light going to the plants on the top!

Thanks guys!

I still need to set up my light fixture, its a 4' T8 4 bulb fixture, though I still need to get bulbs for it, any suggestions would be wonderful, but right now I think I may just get 4 of the 6500k Philips lights from my local store. I also plan on adding more growing area once I get the hang of things.

yup 6500k is what you want for greens- no need to pay for expensive brands just look at the lumen output and compare to the watts

so eg total Lumens divided by total watts= L per W

just buy brand new bulbs though

Update: I got my light up, ended up just using normal T8 fluorescent bulbs from Lowe's.

I have been cycling my system with ammonia, still waiting for the nitrites to drop, the nitrates peaked at 150ppm during the cycling, so I put a potted basil in there along with planting a few basil cuttings in my grow bed. Nitrates are at 80ppm now.

I also bought a 7.5g trash can and connected it to the system with a bridge siphon in order to increase the total water volume, it may also provide a place to grow duck weed at some point.

My pH has dropped to 6.8, but I have zero buffer. I'm going to wait til about 6.5 to add some potassium bicarbonate to raise the pH a bit and provide a buffer to the system before it's ready for fish.
