Curious' 1st system

Hi Guys,

This is an over view of the system i am trying out. It is quiet small, i have an approximate 66L FT with an approximate 33L GB. It is running with the pump in the FT and constant flooded GB.

Currently i am just letting the water cycle without plants and fishes allowing the chlorine some time to vaporize.

It is still a work in progress, still have not figured out how the drain should work going back into the FT.
Future plans are to add the plants and fishes and another 33L GB.

Curious, what type of drain system are you using? It looks to me like you are going with a Bell siphon. If so, I would recommend that you add another 90 degree elbow to the underside of the beds. In my experience, my siphons have always be more reliable when I add two elbows to the drain plumbing. This helps to slow down the flow of water out of the bed, and enables the siphon to build up enough suction to really start and then pull all the water out of the growled.

Otherwise, I think it looks like your off to a great start!

Hi Guys,

Manage to score 4 sword-tails and had added them into the FT, will be using them to cycle the system.

One quick question, if the pump is in the FT, what can i do about the solid waste? It seems to be not able to pump them up into the GB.

In the spend on a few hours, i am down to 3 fishes. 1 poof-ed into thin air, tried looking around to see if there is any sign of the escapee but can't locate it. Any ideas??

Added plants today, got the remaining corn and some chilies as well as 2 cabbage sprouts. As for the remaining fishes, they seems to be doing ok.

Hey Guys quick question,

Fishes lost appetite, has not been feeding today, found the two floating feeds this afternoon and had fished them out. Should i be cautious of some problems surfacing? Attached is the water test result. I do not have the ammonia test kit for the 1st and 2nd day, so no result for them.

Hi Guys,

Anyone know how deep should i transplant seedlings? I have about 2 inches from my water surface to the surface of the grow media. Should i transplant deep enough for the roots to touch the water surface? Or it will be able to obtain the moisture from the grow media?

This is what is happening to my seedlings.

I bury seedlings as I would in the dirt garden. The media is wet and the roots will search for the water.

How much direct sunlight do you plants get per day?

It is out under the patio, it is shaded so no direct sunlight i think. How close to you dig into the media? I was afraid if i go too deep the leaves will be all buried under.

That may be a problem. My very first system was situated under a tree in a shaded section of the yard and it failed miserably. I had little to no growth in my plants at all. there are a few threads here somewhere about plants requirements for sunlight during the day so they may help.

In regards to the seedlings, I bury them about half way up the stalk of the plant I suppose. Enough so the roots are covered and the plant can stay upright on it own. Theres no science to it, just plant it as you would in the garden.
