Great solution for insulation of the pipes, Dasboot! Man, you're inspiring and make me impatient to have my stuff ready here.

Good to see everything is going well, growth seems to be excellent.

When there is a change, we should meet up either there or here and have a beer and chat.

I would love the chance to meet up Paul, any chance to sit and chat over a beer, the wife's eyes lite up when I showed her the message, she is already looking forward to it,we must get something organised, choice for me would be to come to you just to see the scale of your project.
I have sourced some very useful stuff here and only to happy to share things with you. :thumbright:

Today's progress after it finally stopped raining, there was 4 1/2 inches of water in the bottom of the tanks. The sumps are now in at the same height as the floor, blocks and cover to come, need cleaning now after the rains as well.
Anyway I sank short pilings as the ground was soft and level off the top of those,I set the tanks 300 mm higher than the stand pipes in the growbeds. When I filled the tank half way it settled a bit so I adjust the level with hard wood shims.
Second frame and tank, will be tanks tomorrow, didn't like the first lay out so did it again now these two frames are bolted together,as with the first tank will part fill it maybe add more support for the tank, the big one I ended up adding another set of diagonals. Hopefully will finish these tomorrow so I can start on the plumbing

Digging the sumps in was a bitch, bamboo roots then down into some of the heaviest clay,I hate digging that's why Aquaponics seemed right up my street. Shopping in the morning, more timber and the plastic fittings to plumb them in.

Hey dasboot, can I visit next time on holiday in Thailand? Maybe you could show me all the secret hot spots to visit and best places to eat and surf.

Update of work so far,it feels like I have deforested part of Asiawith the amount of timber in the frames.
Sumps aren't big enough, the drains don't flow high enough,so still some mods to do,on the plus side things are growing well.

I really wasn't happy with my first slo pipe,so I took it out and started again. I found a 2 inch bulkhead type fitting, which with some carefull drilling and fitting, were a lovely screw fit through the tank bottom, plenty of tape and silicon finished the job. Under the tanks, there is a 2 inch drop going to a 3 inch drain pipe into sump 2, inside the tank there is a 2 inch overflow tube which controls water height, then placed over this, which slips over the nut part of the bulkhead fitting,a piece of 3 inch pipe, with cut outs in the bottom. This draws water and solids from the bottom of the over flow rising up the inside of the 3 inch and leaving through the 2 inch.
On sump 2 there is a mechanical filter fitted to the top, consisting of a large washing up bowl which is a perfect fit in the barrel top, this is filled with a mixture of plastic media, then on top of this is two layers of very fine mesh, then two layers of a more open weave. In operation it removes everything and as one area gets clogged the water just spreads further over the disc, the disc being simply a 3/4 plastic tube ring with the fine weave fixed over it and a fit for the top of the bowl, the other two layers are simply placed on top of this. In practise it is a simple job to lift the disc of and wash the crap of under the tap.

Keep a close eye on that disk filter over the sump. Right now it might be flowing fine but as soon as you get a good layer of bio-slime forming, you might find that it goops up enough to overflow out of the sump faster than you are willing to clean it.
