The concrete slab was already poured some time ago, but we only managed recently to find a suitable contractor to help us with building the tank walls and do the waterproof rendering. It is Thai style, but at least the guy and his workers are open for suggestions (rare thing with Thai contractors!) so it becomes more a Thai/Farang cooperation. Let's hope that the water and fish stay in!

Note: Equality between men and women is here a natural thing. The feminist movement is probably laughed away by these people. There are 4 women working for this guy as brick layers, and they do a pretty good job! Also get paid the same as the men.

Today (Sunday 18th August) five layers of concrete blocks are finished, starting to pour the concrete edge on top of it.

It is funny, the perception I always had about Thailand is that there would not be many flat unforested areas. And yet there it is.

Looks great. The block work GBS/Fish tank is a really economical construction method. If you plan on the system having a long life then the high initial carbon foot print is offset.

You mentioned in one of your earlier posts that you would use shade cloth to reduce heat load on your system. If I could offer a suggestion, do some research on commercial shade screens that incorporate aluminium strips. Shade cloth absorbs heat even the white stuff where as the commercial screens reflect the heat out of the house almost immediately.

Inspiring system you have set up dear Paul. I am reading through the posts to keep up.

With your permission, I would like to use some of your pictures to display in our farmers meet. Let me know. Thanks.

Sorry Nanniode, I will NOT give you permission to use any of my published pictures, here or the ones on my Facebook pages. They are strictly for own use. But I'm sure you will have enough photo material made yourself to use in your farmers meeting.

Thanks, Nanniode. You're welcome to have a look at it when it is finally ready and operational. It won't be next week or month, though. Hope your plans will work out there in India and wish you good luck with it.

A small update

After finishing the in-ground works, pouring footings and setting up the form boards, we put in the 20cm slab for the power building.

After that it was pouring the 20x20cm columns, getting the walls up and installing the first 24 solar panels.

First priority is to have the system up and running a.s.a.p., so we started to render the battery and inverter room as a first.

I hope the end result will be straight enough to attach things to the walls...... :D

During our own activities on the power house, we had some guys drilling a water well. At 40 meters (120 feet) good quality water was found, although the first hit was at 20 meters (60 feet) but being most likely Mekong water, I choose to let that one pass.

Talking about water, building the fish tank was finished a month ago, and now we have to find time to do the finishing work.

Which means to build in the divider walls to create smaller tanks, adding some kind of redundancy and the option to grow different kind of fish without mixing them. It also means we can go on-line in phases instead of all at once. Further of course the waterproof rendering and plumbing.

As a last a shot of the papaya's on our land. Doing very good! The first is what we call a Katoy (Ladyboy) and the second is a female (next posting).
