So I've been reading about "biofloc"technology and its use in recirculating aquaculture.

The basic principle is that you add carbon to the system, which promotes the production of heterotrophic bacteria by providing a substrate and food source. Heterotrophic bacteria forms flocculated blobs by conglomerating with suspended solids, algae, micro-organisms and the like. The production of these blobs supposedly removes metabolic wastes much faster than nitrification by autotrophic bacteria. The blobs are also very nutritional, containing significant protein and fatty acids, and provide additional feed to the fish (filter feeders/herbivores/detritivores etc) or shrimp.

Is anyone trying/intending to try/interested in this?

Probably won't see too many people in a backyard system trying something like this and not just because of the system size. Tilapia are one of the more common species that use this and they are either illegal or won't do well in colder climates (I think most of the species this has been tried on probably aren't native to colder climates and wouldn't do well in most of the USA - Australia might fare better though). Might be someone around here that is using this but I haven't heard of them doing it yet
