Getting ready to build my first system. It will be indoors on a metal and plywood shelving unit. Here is what I worked out so far:

Constant flood
30gal FT with no holes overflow (hole drilled at minimum FT level)
27 gal sump tank with fish tank heater, pump, and aquarium's air lift sponge filter
27 gal tote for grow bed with stand pipe and emergency overflow just under rim
1" PVC because I have a lot of it

Image
Questions:
*Do you think I have good enough protection for plugging/ overflowing issues?
*Do you think this pump will work or is overkill, 26gph at 5' lift?
*Anything obvious I'm missing?

Welcome to the forum. Is there any reason you want a sump? Other than species separation I see no point of it in this situation. Just pump from FT to GB and return to FT.

The 30 gallon aquarium is in my living room with guppies and gouramis in it right now. Planning on growing some herbs for kitchen. Everything has to pass the "pretty test" from my husband too.

I was already moving to have refugium tank because I don't like the heater and filter cluttering up the tank. I also wanted a spot for water to go if something plugged up/failed other than hardwood floor.

I got my pump and this is my setup now. 1" overflow from 30 gal tank to 10 gal growbed. The pump is in sump well in corner of growbed and pumps back to tank.

Overflow will move to back of tank once I'm sure it is working okay. Had 2 close calls with almost overfilling tank and back siphoning while testing. Water level in growbed will be adjusted before I plant anything. The light needs mounted as well.

My thyme germinated after 3 days! :thumbright: So much faster than the 14 days listed on the packet.

I also have a baby guppy but I couldn't get a picture of him. There were probably more before I broke down the 30 gallons and cleaned everything. Oh well...

All my seeds have germinated. I'm going to do some major thinning once the plants get bigger. Herb seeds are tiny.

Water test pH 7.8, temp 74oF, ammonia 0.5ppm, NO2 0, NO3 80pppm.

How much water should I be adding to my little system? I have to add a gallon every 3 days. It seems like a lot. The thyme is growing well, showing 2nd set of leaves. I have 3 guppy babies.

Fishtank: 30 gal
Growbed: ~ 3 gal
Lights: Fish LED, Grow 2 compact flurescents
Room: ~50% humidity, 22oC

Given it is heated, you will have to add more water. As long as you cant see any leaks anywhere, just make sure your pump is always submerged. I have to add a lot of water to my indoor system too.

The basil is growing well. I had my first harvest yesterday when I thinned out the plants.

The oregeno has started changing colors and thyme is pretty wimpy. The thyme is direct seeded and others are in a peat pot.

Should I start the thyme over?
I think the oregano is showing iron deficiency in new leaves. Would you agree? How much iron for roughly 40 gallons?

I have had few pump deaths that way. After they start sucking air for a few hours they never seem like they pump the same again. Throws balance off and they start to grind the impeller shaft on the very cheap pumps that I have gotten.

The system worked okay, but I got tired of burnt plants and too little space. I'm moving the system to my walk-out basement in front of the big north facing window. (Picture was about 1hr after dawn)

There will be two of the 27 gallon growbeds once system is setup. Unfortunately, we popped a seam on the glass tank carrying it down the steps.

Any tips on glass aquarium resealing other than googling it? I'm debating trying to cut overflow hole in tank now that it is technically broken....
