Hey CBB: The boards are 1"x3"x8' so not very substantial (the pergola is made from 2x4s). I am trying to see how light I can make them and still have what I want. I don't want a DWC bed, I still have two larger troughs from my older system that I can use as DWC. This is intended to go for a neat vertical shade structure but still AP.

Right now the bottoms of the troughs will remain unprotected. The plastic is pretty tough but would not survive punctures, I can always re-do a trough that was damaged. A lot of the time used has been to figure out methods, now that I have some of those I can re-do stuff without too much time.

Hey Bob: Whatever I can get my hands on! Some ornamentals, some vegetables. Whilst painting the wood with silicone I kept thinking about shrubbery, the kids were watching the Holy Grail haha.

Got the mortar tub/media bed filled with lava rocks, I expect this to clear the water soon (pretty green with algae from the sun). The pipes need to be cemented as they could pop off at any time.

Did a second leak test on the troughs after shoving globs of silicone into the leaky corners. Still leak a bit, but I went ahead and ran slotted pipes along the bottom and filled three with charcoal. Lowe's is sold out of charcoal, which is to be expected this time of year. I'll be visiting there to get some when it is back in stock to fill up the other two. Used old charcoal from previous years' systems to fill up the three troughs. Charcoal does not break down and disappear, it is reusable.

Realized the plumbing could be simpler if I had an even number of troughs, then the pipes could come from and return to the same sump bucket thing. The sump bucket thing will be filled from the sump pump, as a way station on the way back to the FT (in the front corner of the shed, raised up on a shelf to reduce the head height needed by a second small pump to get to the troughs). As it is I am expecting to make a planted wall that returns the trough water to the sump.

Update, charcoal shortage after July 4th slowed things down a bit, DW got me 6 bags and I finished filling up the last two (used just three bags). Plumbed them together, using a square bucket as a place to put a smaller pump to get the water all the way up to the arbor. Need to adjust it further as the bucket would overflow if I let it go. Next going to see if the main pump can make it all the way up there.

All but one trough is leaking a lot at the corners. I will either attempt to seal them off again or make the most of it by using the drips to grow more plants.

So the pump I'm using actually can make it up to the arbor (barely) so I was able to eliminate the bucket and second pump. Trough ends are still leaky, but not enough that a hose top-off can't deal with so I'm not going to make any other changes soon, just planting. I'm using this as a guide for planting times here in MD, I like this one because it's graphical.

Pole beans climbing up string, bottom leaves on some had what I think was rust, maybe came from the re-used lava rocks and since this is constant flood and the water level is right up to the top kind of. Something ate the tops a lot of the littler seedlings. Some holes that look like it could be slug damage but not too bad yet. As the Summer ends this bed will get increasing amounts of sun, and I won't have to move it for the Winter because it's inside the footprint of the greenhouse.

That one very pale bean plant looks just like one I had in 2008 which I decided happened because the plant was right next to the bed inlet and didn't like being so wet. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2645&p=134782&hilit=pale#p134782

Thanks Scotty I put a variety of seeds in there today, will have to keep watering them until they sprout because the water is only at the bottom.

Luckily it rained this morning so I don't have to water them today. I put some ornamental garlic, nasturtium, poppies, peas, sad strawberry plants, bush beans, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage in there.

I'm starting to make a seed starting area in the mud room above the 50 gallon aquarium. I will put a trough there and try a couple variations on Francois' styrofoam lettuce seed starting experiment.

That reminds me, it's time for me to get some Fall crops going. Got to hustle and get the DWC beds done so I'll have a place to put them :headbang:
