It's been a while between updates, been busy helping replace a friend's floor and the usual day-to-day life stuff. Anyway, got a bit done today, hopefully it wont be too long before it's up and running.

Got it backfilled around the frame, but I need to build up the soil a little now the tanks are in and level it a bit, that should neaten it up and cover the top of the tin.

Next step from here is putting the uprights for the shadehouse in in behind the tanks, I think it'll be too fiddly once the GB's are set up. Then to insulate and clad the tanks, clad the GB and get it all put together!

Two more pics, because why not, lol. :P

Just a shot of the UPS I'll be using for backup, which will be hiding in a car battery box, and eventually hooked up to a deep cycle battery that will be in the other battery box I bought. The lid for the battery box had little vents so I made sure they were sealed up, the last thing I want is water leaking on my electrics, lol.

Just a quick question because I can't brain today (thanks to a stabby headache o' doom)...

I can use an air pump to supply air to two separate fish tanks can't I? As long as it has enough capacity to maintain both tanks? I was thinking something like this: http://r.ebay.com/IB8Kce might be sufficient for two separate IBC systems, or would I need something with a bit more oomph?

I'm mainly thinking extra backup in case one of the pumps fails, I have a third battery backup power point on my UPS that I think would be ideal for an air pump (supplying both tanks), how does that idea sound to you guys?

As for actual progress on my system...well I painted and cut up some wood today, that's something right? lol :P

Quite a small update as progress has been slow. Painted up and fixed on most of the timber cladding, still need to put the capping, vertical edging and bottom 'starter boards' though. Ran out of timber and white paint though so I skipped ahead a bit and got one tank circulating to help get rid of the chlorine before I get the scoria, hopefully Tuesday/Wednesday if I can tee it up.

A friend surprised me today though and brought over three of his goldfish he wrangled out of his pond, I was going to borrow them to start one tank cycling but was waiting til the media was in. Oh well not a problem, they seem happy enough in there for now! I think there are at least two, possibly three generations of goldfish the black and white one is the biggest and oldest.

Anyway, enough rambles, a few photos but they aren't much to look at at the moment, hopefully it'll look more presentable soon.

They look wonky but it's the fence that's actually sloping, lol.

This will be the middle upright for the shadehouse when it's done, obviously less bendy and braced when it's finished.

I've got some seedlings going, although at this stage they all pretty much look the same, lol. Not surprising given they are mostly from the same botanical family. I need to start thinning them out a bit though I think.

The fish are pooping up a storm, I really need to get the scoria in asap, I've just been scooping the excess out for now so they aren't bombarded by their own funk. Who'd have thought three fish could make so much mess, lol.

Sloooowly slowly getting there.

A good friend made me get off my arse yesterday and go get some scoria, so that's in now, although the fish have vanished now the water is red, lol. The weather seems to have turned so it's going to make cycling even slower and turn the yard into a big, muddy mess (as opposed to just a big mess, lol).

Got a bit more of the timber on, but I still have more to go on the bottom beds and capping all around for both FT's & GB's (plus tank lid). But yay, scoria, lol.

Did a second test, (the first base line test was as you'd expect, all zeroes).

pH: 8.0
Ammonia: 3.0ppm (approx)
Nitrites: 0.25ppm
Nitrates: 2.5ppm (approx)

And woo, more seedlings to go in.

The seedlings I've been growing from seed are doing ok, a bit leggy and soft, but I'll thin them out, put those in the GB's and see how they do, and let the others grow a big bigger before putting them in.

I do need to cut down the standpipes in the GB's first, guesstimated the height and they are a touch too high, but that's no biggy really.

When I get the other one going I think I'll try cycling with charlie carp and see how that goes, shall be interesting to do as I've only used fish so far.

Got some of the seedlings in that I bought, need to get the other system going though to get the rest planted.

There is some Tuscan Kale, Pineapple Sage, Silverbeet, lots of Savoy Cabbage, some Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Odourless Red Onion and two Australian Purple Garlic plants as well.

They are all probably planted a bit too close but oh well, I'll see how they go.

Looking good, Soon Azira you will need to change the title of this post to "Azira's really nice IBC system"

I'd be a bit concerned about the high Ammonia reading!

might be worth easing off on the fish food?

Maybe, if I ever get it finished! lol

Yup, already holding off food til the readings are a bit better. Although they look darker in the photo than they were actually, I didn't like seeing an Ammonia reading that high.

Hopefully things will improve now that there is more water and gravel in the system. There are only three fish and they haven't been fed much since going in, but boy are they dirty buggers!

Hmm, had a thought, should I salt the system to help the fish deal with the Ammonia level? I salted to 1ppt when they first went in but it'd be lower now there is a bit more water in the system.

Should I give it a few more days to see if the Ammonia level goes down (it's still between 2-3ppm) or salt now just in case?
