So in conclusion proper system design is highly encouraged and adequate mechanical and biological filtration is needed before GBs to maximize your plant growing power.

I know of no studies that have compared plant growth in GBs receiving filtered water vs non filtered water. If you can direct us to some I am sure we would appreciate it.

These was one study which I think you may have posted a link to recently that compared lettuce growth when fed filtered and unfiltered water from a catfish pond. Very relevant to DWC but not to GBs.

Similarly your comments are very relevant to DWC but less so to GBs, particularly to FnD GBs. One of the principal advantages of GBs that are flooded and drained is that the majority of the oxygen that is need to deal with the BOD is sourced from the air drawn into the air during the drain cycle.

It may be true that GBs would perform better with prior mechanical filtration but as I said I am aware of no studies that have investigated this and there are oddles of examples showing that it is not necessary.

Needs to be clarified though. There are so many sources out there saying that solids removal is necessary rather than optional despite the evidence to be found here.

yes Stuart you are right about the flood and drain media beds, filtration isn't mandatory. but from my experiences filtration for DWC is extremely advised and hence I was qouting DWC GB in above posting. but I'll be more specific next time

Couldn't agree more about the need for filtration before water enters DWC.

Hi Cookie,

The system looks good. I'll be interested to see how you do. I'm sure you'll be able to strip the Nitrates but I think it will be more challenging to automate. I'm not sure what would happen with that many fish in a cooler climate during the colder months when the filtration slows or stops. Makes me wonder how this will work for other regions. What's the other barrel next to the bio-filter and degassing stage for?

I agree full with u scotty bout the colder climate.. in the Caribbean we are blessed with constant temperature between 25 to 30oC.. the next barrel is actually a duplicate of the same bio filter... actually I got 3 in total... the more the merrier I say..
