This is my first system. It consists of three plastic containers - Two 18gal containers for GB filled with river rock, and a 23gal container for the FT. I'm using ~12 comets in the FT. I may be a little off on the sizes.

It took a weekend to build.

I managed to get some water from a co-worker that has fresh water fish tanks. Within a day, ammonia quick dropped from 1ppm to 0.25ppm, and nitrates moved from 0ppm to 30ppm.

I added a few plants to the GB; tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, and jalapenos. Since adding them I've read somewhere that they are all for more advanced AP systems. The second container I added a variety of seeds, little gem lettuce, oregano, basil, chives, bell pepper, and parsley.

The first two weeks have been very exciting, I've watched the plants double (nearly triple) in size.

Image

I see lettuce and basil are sprouting in the second container, and I've added some Romain as well. The spider in the corner of the image was added when setting up the system. Instead of testing the water to see if the system was running, I watched it droop and perk up indicating that nitrates were available.

The water tests have been consistently - ammonia: 0ppm, nitrite: 0ppm, nitrate: 0ppm.

Great start! I went ahead and edited your posts so the images would be embedded instead of external links. In the future, when you paste the link in, put it in the IMG brackets. The easiest way is in the full editor. When you paste the link in, leave it all selected, or select all of the text that defines the link. Then hit the IMG button. It will nest it nicely between the IMG brackets, and make the picture show up beautifully.

It's been one month since plants were added to the growbed.

There are a few of the sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, about 10. No cucumbers. I've pulled the jalepeno from the system. Bugs consumed all of the little gem lettuce, and the romaine doesn't look like it enjoys the direct light or the heat.

I haven't noticed any fish deaths.

Ph: 7.6
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm

I'm a little disappointed in the fruit production, but still amazed about the plant growth.

Hand pollination makes all the difference.

Ok Ronmaggi. I'll try it. Nothing to lose. I don't recall seeing any males. :(

Thanks for the information on hand pollinating. I ended up at this webpage, with photos of both male and female flowers, Give Hand-Pollination a Try. The first thing I learned is that the flowers I have in abundance of are male, not female is I stated earlier.

Armed with a cotton swab, I searched high and low for females. I was shocked to find some. As I started collecting pollen from the males, I was annoyed by a bumble bee. I swatted him out of my face a few times, before I realized I was doing his job. I left the little critter to do his job and sat out on the patio, enjoying a beer while he worked.

I've found nearly a half-dozen little cucumbers. I'm excited. Thanks again for the info. Mother nature FTW!

A coworker asked to see how I had my air pump waterproofed. Here's a photo of the air pump and other electrical connections in an upside-down plastic container.

First harvest! I've pulled 3 very ripe cherry tomatoes. :)

They made an awesome egg white, spinach omelet.

My system spent a month unattended. Algae took over in the fish tank. My cucumbers finished, but only produced little squat fruit. I pulled the tomatoes out of the growbed. They were still growing but I needed the space.
