The change in Nitrite so huge that I tested it twice. Nitrite droped from the top of the chart to zero, within 24h.
Everything else stayed unchanged.

What does that mean ?

That means that you can slowly ramp up feed, while watching your levels.

I have no fish in the tank jet. I plan to transfer the Tilapia today, they are now 3 to 5 inches long.

Yesterday evening I moved the Tilapia to their knew home.
Everybody was still a live this morning. I tested the water before I fed them. Nitrite was up a bit, 0.25, Nitrate was unchanged, PH and Amonia same.
I checked this late afternoon, Nitrite at zero and Nitrate at 40 up.

That light above the fish tank makes me nervous. Is there something at least holding it in place?

One dog tail wag and it'd be in with the fish.

How's the plant growth coming along?

The light is screwed in, dog tail proof. I always have to make everything Dumpster proof, he got a tail and he is always happy.
The plants have been going a long till I dumped the fish. Will be interesting what happens now.
I got a test patch, its the white section on the green tank.
Its swamp cooler pad, aspen, I seeded it with gras. The is idea to produce a sod, than can be used as live stock feed in the winter.
If it works, than I would rig the system for this winter for my horses, to suplemnet them during the winter.
If I can produce this winter for my Horses, 8, than this would be a commercial option for the future.
This WE I will leave for 2 weeks. A friend of mine will feed the fish, dogs, dugs, geese and horses. So middle of October, I will deal with what ever happens in between, when I get back

Winter around here is when we fatten all the livestock up, because it's wet and the grass grows far faster.

When you said about the growing sod for livestock, it reminded me of this video:

It'd work just as well for Aquaponics I'd think. They don't even use lighting for the shoots. The horse loved it, ripped it out with a passion.

Yes, that is what I have in mind. They sell production units for around $9000. I guess I can built one for far less.
Winter means a lot of snow around here, normaly, and very cold. So growing feed for livestock with an aqua system would be a nice spin off.
When I am back from my trip, I will get to it.

So I am back home since Sunday. Both system have survived. I had a friend feed the fish.
The one in the indoor garden is not a happy system. Probably due to the white flies. so I did some radical measures and cut down my Hibiscus to the minimum and removed all the white fly invested plants and leaves. The strawberries do not look to healthy either. They are next
My house and the indoor garden were not heated and probably had an average temp of 50 or so.
I did not loose any Goldfish during that time.
System 2 was heated and the Tilapia have doubled in size. I had seeded some lettuce and other stuff before I left, onions and brocolie. That stuff has come up rather strong.
This Wednesday I started my Barley experiment. I bought 1lbs and put it in a small plastic container, which has a drain hole about a inch above the bottom. I placed it under the drip pipe.
The stuff is already germinating, 2 days in.
I will wait till next Wednesday to see how that works out.
If the result is good, I got a construction project coming.

With barley I am getting a bit of a problem and have to rethink. The stuff ferments, which it should do, the thing with beer. So Aqua I guess would be questionable.

The Tilapia are changing their feeding habit, they start to ignore the fingerling food and go for the teenager stuff. When I dump those pellest, they go for them but than spit them out again. It takes about an hour soacking and than they are able to eat. I gave them some duck crack ( Iceberg salad ) and they have started to eat that stuff.
They ignored it 3 weeks ago.
Most of the Tilapia are 6 inches now some just 3 or so.

The plants did not look good when I got home from my trip. The water tested alright, but I dumped about 200 gallons and refilled the FT.
Since than the plants are doing good

I brought some interesting seeds home, one a Eisberg Radi, its a root plant like Carrots, I put a few seeds out and they have come up.

Interesting comparison. I planted some in dirt and they have not shown jet, the ones in the grow bed are an inch tall.

Its fall and we have night frost

In the Wintergarden, that system is not happy, fighting bugs.
Cutting the Hibiscus down to nothing has hel[ed with the white fleis, I gues I have those kinde under control.
But the stuff in the growbeds have lice and I can not get a handle of it.
So it will be a complet wipe out and start the beds all over, fresh media fresh plants.
The Goldfish are doing very good, have not lost any in 4 weeks.

You might need to fiddle with the amount of water the barley is getting if it's fermenting. But I'm not sure if that's more or less.

I might have to have a look into the radi, I always love a new plant.

Its a speciality of Bavaria, Slice it salt it have a beer with it.

Since this feels like a long winter coming, it feels like it, 30 years experience up here, I think IO will have a lot of time to find out the barly thing.

I really would love to get that one going.

The fermentation creates dead spots and you can see the bubbles come up., within 2 days and it stinks.
If I collect the gases I could heat the place :D

I have a problem.
I had that major die of in the FT, lost about 100 Goldfish. Saved 40 or so. I think I have that now under control.

But in the last 4 month I have been unable to grow anything. What ever I plant germinates very nicely but than dies.
I cleaned out the grow beds twice, but it did not do any good. One bed has pee gravel and the other lava rock.
When ever the plants germinate and are about 1 inch they attract a very fine spiderweb and than that stuff is all over the rocks and the plants die of.

Even when they do not have that web, they germinate, grow some and that's it.

I check water quality, ph 7, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate over 80.
That side is were it should be.

The webs are only in the grow beds. The dirt garden has none of them and what ever I have planted there grows like crazy.

I have that little pond in the indoor garden. I wanted to do water plants, but than my dogs used it as their swimming pool. So that did not work. I transformed it into a wicking bed, not connected to the aquaponics system.. What ever I planted there does very good.

So my thought, transform the grow beds into wicking beds.
But my concern, what leaches out through the weed tarp. Is that a concern, or should I not worry ?

I took water sampels from the pond-wicking bed and that water is as clean as drinking water.

Any advice ?
