This aquaponics system is located in Charlotte, NC at Garinger High School. In collaboration with Friendship Gardens and The Green Teacher Network, the Urban Farm at Garinger will demonstrate various forms of food production and give students hands-on experience. Jacob Huffman, a recipient of a Levine Scholarship at UNCC, facilitated the first Aquaponics system at Garinger High School through his scholarship. This "UVI Type" raft aquaponics system serves as a science lab for Garinger students, as well as supply Frienship Trays with approximately 150 servings of high quality salad greens per week.

Great to see schools getting involved, actually spending a bit of money and not just talking about it or showing students a few photos. :thumbright:

Joel has done a great job promoting aquaponics to schools here in OZ and there still needs to be more work done with school promotion.

Holy Carp. I saw Garinger High school and I was all like: "There's another one?" I (barely) graduated from East Meck, but my older sister graduated from Garinger.

Since many people don't know Charlotte on here I'll elaborate a bit on Garinger. Garinger High School is one of Charlotte's oldest High Schools. The School is in effect a relocation of Charlotte's old Central High, as such it traces it's roots back to 1909 and the formation of that school. This history is reflected in the School's mascot the Wildcat. The area in which Garinger sits is solidly in what Charlotte's former mayor (and now US Transportation Secretary) called Charlotte's Crescent of Poverty.

Garinger has for years struggled with academic performance. This is not necessarily a reflection of it's teaching staff however. Many of the kids who attend the school come from desperately poor and culturally disaffected families. A large part of it's academic problems stem from the city's lack of focus on the school's feeder population. To be fair the city was also rapidly expanding during the last 50ish years.

Hopefully by providing hands on activity and learning this project will help some kids focus on their education and keep them for either falling through the cracks or into the traps that are so easy for kids in their situations to succumb to.

Collard greens and lettuce growing well. Fish tanks are not stocked fully and the daily feeding rate is only 100g when it should be around 1000g. Just goes to show how forgiving Aquaponics can be. Although growth would be much more rapid if the feeding rate was higher.
