Greetings all! Spring is just around the corner here in northern California, and I'm busily trying to digest the enormous amount of information available here. Previously I had been going through Meg Stout's book, until somebody here pointed me to Dr. Wilson Lennard's backyard system calculator. Meg has gathered some good information and helpful suggestions, but Lennard's calculator seems much more like engineering rather than the seat-of-the-pants approach I had been finding.

But after plugging in all my numbers on Lennard's spreadsheets, it seems like a much larger FT:GB ratio than I have been seeing. I feel like perhaps I've missed something very important, so I'm hoping somebody experienced will review this.

I'm planning to use a CHIFT-PIST arrangement in a flood & drain system. FT is a 1300 L (350 gal) round stock tank, similar to this. I'm going to have a SLO set up to keep the FT at about 1100 L (300 gal).

Outflow goes to a single (!?!) 1.5 sq m (16 sq ft) LECA-filled GB, 300 mm (1 ft) deep. Drainage via an Affnan bell auto-siphon, into the ST. I'm guessing that the water volume in the GB will be approximately 1/4th of the total GB volume, so about 100 L (25 gal). To allow for evaporation and topping off (and make sure the pump stays submerged), I will be using a 260 L (70 gal) stock tank for the sump.

I'm planning to keep the fish stocking level low, at about 7 g/L. (BTW, how do I accomplish this? Just feed them less?) Initially I'm going to be using mosquitofish, until I have a better understanding of pH and temperature range throughout the year.

A few more details I forgot to mention...

GB substrate is Hydrocorn XL (16-25 mm).

I have 950 L/hr (250 gal) pump, based on an earlier (and much smaller) plan.
