Dear Friends,
At long last we start our journey!
Please see our story and pictures on our website-
http://www.herbsfromwales.co.uk/joomla/ ... &Itemid=44
We are looking forward to the months of hard work ahead and are keeping our fingers crossed that we have thought about nearly everything that we will need for the initial setting up. :flower:
We are sure that all your experiences will help us in the future.

Kind regards,

Him and Her!

Not our toys but belong to the building contractors .

We got the 85 metre long underground ducting buried in the ground today ready for the the heavy duty steel wire armoured electrical cable and network cable.
Another trench will have to be dug to pick up the water supply

Hopefully the frame of the 45feet x 45feet building will be up by the weekend,
and next week the drainage and concrete slab will be going down,
thereafter it is in the laps of the gods.
WD

It looks like you have a lot of experience in hydroponics- what got you interested in aquaponics?

Hi outbackozzie -
as we have said - the structure will be 45feet x 45feet - the sides and roof will be alternate metal and transluscent profile sheeting.
This will give the inside a mixture of good sunlight for growbeds and shade for the fish tanks.

The 3 fish tanks will be 98" diameter and 33" deep - they hold 1875 gallons each ( we only work in imperial measurements) and we are putting Rainbow trout in two of these tanks and common carp in the other one. We plan on having 8-10 growbeds for each fish tank - measuring 86" long x 46" wide and 12" deep - to hold Hydroton clay balls.We had problems getting the growbeds and we have had to deepen the 24 that we have purchased with untreated wood covered in black polythene!

3 smaller tanks are 60" diameter and 27" deep will contain fingerlings and one as an isolation ward if needed.
There is a long way to go and we have set ourselves a 12 month target to get everything in place and functioning.
We will keep you all posted!

Angie - aquaponics is a natural extension to the hydroponics and offers tremendous scope for food production.
Aquaponics is in its infancy in the UK and hopefully our efforts can inspire others.

WD

Are you sure on those measurements WD, I have done the conversion using cubic inches and also metric
and 98" diameter x 33" depth work out around 900 imerial gallons or 4,090 litres ???

98" is ~ 2.5 metres

This is your fault OBO - I would never have questioned this if not for you :evil5:
Hope I'm right :oops:

if I'm correct then the smaller ones hold 1256 litres x 3 = 3,770 litres (or 830 imperial gallons)

just working backwards using 1,875 gallons at a depth of 33", the diameter would need to be 141" (12')

either:
a) I've got nothing else to do;
b) got other work that I don't want to do;
c) either of the above; or
d) neither of the above:lol:
