Yeah mines pretty much the opposite. I have 2 wine vats as the main fish tanks and a ibc as the sump.

I got my vats for a really nice price second hand from a bloke in macedon.

Seven and a half months since we got the 100 SP's and we just had our 2nd fatality!

And the Third!....
And the Forth! ....
Fifth, Sixth, ...............................Eighty-seventh, Eighty-eighth....

Thursday afternoon, they were doing fine, Feeding well (For the time of year)

Friday morning, I noticed as I fed them, that one or two of them "Flashed" occasionally as they were eating!
Inside the house I have African Cichlids, and they quite often do this to stir up the food from the ground or to ward off other hungry fish,
so the bells did not ring yet.

Saturday morning I went out to grab some silver beet to go under the poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce,
I fed the trout, and looked into the SP's,
At about that time I thought "Wow, My first HSM!"

I immediately dumped half the offending IBC and then salted to about 12ppm to give the survivors a salt bath.
After 2 hours or so I refilled the tank to full to reduce salt levels to 6ppm.

I repeated this action on Sunday,
then drained the tank back down to 1/2 way again to increase the effectiveness of the air pump.

I did some tests on some water samples taken as I was dumping the original water
No Ammonia,
No Nitrite,
Negligible Nitrate,
PH 7.6

Tank had been basically isolated from the system for winter to try to stabilize temps,
so at least the trout should not be affected.

DO was via air pump and also waterfall coming from the temporary filter system I had installed as part of the isolation process.

The SP's were covered in a fungal looking slime similar to what I've seen associated with fin rot,
but all fins were fine and the eyes were clear and black. (Except for the slimy coating over them)

The survivors are starting to show some signs of improvement but are a long way from safe.

Each time I have a look there is another one to fish out, Last count there were about 10 left.

I'll just keep doing water changes and salting.
At this stage I'm not even "De-Chlorinating" the water, I know it will stress the fish,
But it just may stress the slime even more.

On A lighter note,
9 weeks to the day, "Fingerling to food source"
Had trout for dinner, just in case they get crook too!
Larger one came in at 300g / 290mm
Smaller one at 250g / 260mm

Would have preferred them larger, but now if everything goes pearshaped, at least we've eaten fish from the system!

Now down to about 5 SP's left
Keep on salting etc.
Just received a pdf file on SP Diseases and treatments.
Put out by NSW Dept of Primary Industry.
Its Awsome! 84 full colour pages of photo's and details on treatments
This site won't allow pdf's so I sent it to Faye to upload somewhere!

Ok, Its been a while...
But here's whats happening.
SP's all karked it as mentioned earlier,
Trout are firing along nicely and feeding ferociously.

I've picked up an 800 litre chest freezer and have been running tests with a thermo switch system that was given to me by a friend in the refrigeration game.
It has been made to simply plug inline with the mains power supply, and take temp readings through a waterproof sensor hanging in the freezer compartment
It has a 10 amp relay and can be set to whatever temp & range you wish.
over the last few months it has worked without fault, making the "deep freezer" work at "just below" freezing point (So that I can still make iceblocks).instead of its normal -20c.
At this temperature the internal thermostat of the freezer is bypassed and the unit is controlled completely by the external unit.
Over Christmas I will seal the seams with silicone and incorporate the freezer as a fish tank.

For the first time I have grown a rhubarb plant in a "satellite" GB.
A 50 litre tub separate to the rest of the beds.
Its Huge! each leaf is about 600mm across!! and there is at least 30 leaves!
every time I look at the sump, the float valve is trickling water into the system.
I first thought there was a leak the flow was that much,
It's well over 50L/Day on top of what it usually takes.
when I turned off water to the rhubarb bed, the "leak" stopped and rhubarb wilted.

How long does Rhubarb take to ripen?
The stalks are still only just a little bit red at the base,
and more leaves are growing every day.
So much for target 155 :blackeye:

Yep, 50L/day in summer... would be a pretty average top up due to transpiration loss...

Dug out the sump tank the other day,
A 200mm split in the bottom of the tank was the reason for the extra water consumption.
I replaced it with a smaller 350 litre version, the water levels seem a bit more stable now.

Following ongoing harrasment from several directions, I lashed out and bought a Digital Video Camera.
Seems only fitting that the first upload from it is an AP related item.
Here is a quick look at the Micro system. Not much plantlife as it has just been dug over.

I'll get some footage of the bigger system once the place is cleaned up a bit after the repairs

Took a couple of trout out tonight, 420g and 350g respectively.
Who says you can't "oversummer" these beautiful things.
Might have to get some bigger plates for later in the year.

Still over 20 in the system.
Checked the fingerling tank tonight, and there are a couple larger than the small one in the photo.
