thanks CB

this pic is looking west thru the GH and across the east GB's and FT...

I have the gravity feed piping in place and have been cycling for a few weeks now.... and things are looking good.....

the plants in all the pots you see started out as seeds and are past due to going in the GB's, but had to wait for the nitrates to show up first..... I did plant three cuttings from that big tom plant that was producing so well up until I pulled it out at the end of march..
they are the ones you see nearest the FT in the background..... I have also added a lot of pepper plants, hot and mild................

I have to get the west GB's in place and plumbed in before I can re-work my feed plumbing as Im not sure if I will need to by-pass some of the water or not......

the GB on the right will be mostly for vining crops.. I am in the process of building the trellis to go against the wall, it should be up tomorrow..... I have a bunch of plants almost ready for that bed.....

the local owner of the hydroponics shop (progressive gardens) called me and came by yesterday to check out the system..... he was very interested in AP and seemed to like the system really well..... we are talking about future projects..... and ideas about marketing

I cant wait to be finished with the basic GH/AP setup so I can take a break :)

I will wait until this fall to finish the sides and south wall vents, as I dont need them thru the summer....

JT

I even had time today to get the cable support in the south wall of the GH.....

by running this cable from the bottom center out to the outside tops, this stiffens
the entire GH and prevents it from moving side to side......

using plastic coated cable, instead of 2 x 4 bracing lets 99% of the light in.....

What lining did you use for the fish tank? How do you make the FT water tight after drilling a hole?

Hey Zman

I used the EPDM liner

EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber, highly flexible stable material that is not only easy to work with, but long lasting and aquatic safe. We offer a name brand pond liner, "Firestone PondGard". Warning! Be sure the EPDM liner you use is fish safe.

then I used uniseals to run the PVC thru...

Thanks DecalsbyJT,

Can i ask how did you manage to get the EPDM to "fit" into the corners? Usually if you try to fit a piece of plastic (or anything else for that matter) into a box you will get "extra" bits in the corner. But from what i can see in that pic you dont.

You just have to fold the liner into the corners.... it takes a little time and you will have to cut off the excess after attaching it...

I found that if you fill the FT about half way, it makes folding the liner easier....

It is also possible to fold the liner in such a way that the fold seams are actually vertically up right in the corners which might help keep fish like catfish from trying to hide under the flap but folding that was is a little trickier.

Update on outside system...

have been checking water quality for the last few weeks, as the system had to basically start over on cycling.... my PH was 8.2 but now has dropped to 8 and am hoping to drop a little more...

My ammonia has been steady at .5 all this time and have been checking the outside system as well and that has been running .5 also.... it seemed kinda strange to me that both systems would read .5 ammonia morning and evening..... My test liquid was about out and I ordered another set......

I used the new test kit and found that my GH system was 0 ammonia and the outside system was also 0 ammonia... even though the old test liquid said it was .5

my test liquid was about a year and a half old.. now Im pretty sure that it was bad..... so my suggestion is to get new testing liquids at least one a year....

my fish are now happy they are getting fed on a regular basis.... now that I have a good measure on my ammonia levels

GH AP last night am. was .5 amm. , this morning it was 0 so I think the cycling is almost finished....

outdoor system was 1.5 ammonia last night and this morning was 1.0 am (fishless)

every so often when I think something might be hinky with a test kit, I will check it with plain water to make sure it reads 0 when it should (I'm lucky that my well water is free of nitrates and ammonia as well as salt so it makes diluting with well water good enough for when I need to dilute to get usable readings.)

Keep up the good work

noticed today that algea was building up in the rock guard of the smaller GB.... the large GB rock guard is nice and clean......

so just made some quick siphon covers with a few holes..........

this should solve the problem...
