got a chance to work on the FT for a bit more this afternoon....

got the panels bolted down and bolted together...

put the end panel skins on and got them fastened

applied the other skin to the FT... will install the last piece when I get the
overflows put in... I will have to build up a cross section of the GB to see where
to put the overflows and exactly where the ST will go..

well things are progressing slowly....

built a mock-up of the GB so I could get the exact placement of the ST....

then laided out my first cut line.... from this line into the middle of the GH I will be leveling the ground....

then started the grunt work.. digging out for the ST....

A modified layout with an NFT pipe added with wire shelving for starting plants..

got an hour or so to work today..... so got the ST hole size roughed out....

the first pic is a ledge for the 4x4 to sit on, which makes the ST level, the ground is higher toward the outside of the GH...

the third pic is the complete rough shape of the ST.. now all I have to do is
dig down 14" and remove 56 cubic feet of soil then build the ST

Question: I noticed some people have used the 6mm contractors plastic.... I was planning on using it under the ST to keep the plywood frame dry... then use heavier epdm for inside the ST...

how long will the plastic last if the sun doesnt get to it?.. should I use something better?

thanks
JT

I was lucky enough to spend another few minutes digging out the ST...yeah!! :drunken: :drunken:

Im shooting for mid june to start the system (fishless) up.....

Question:

I was planning on using plywood sides attached to 4x4 on the sides and the GB legs would sit on that....

first layer would be 6mm construction plastic, then ST bottom ply, then sides sitting on that...

anyone have any other ideas how to construct this ST? all suggestions greatly appreciated

jT

Yes, square end shovel, on foot on it and take out 10" of soil each shovel full.....

if it rains, it will get water into it.. because its lower then the outside of the GH

Can you 'bund' the area flowing to the digg out?
Make it go the other way

I'm not entirely certain that plastic and plywood under your sump tank liner are needed but if there is something heavy (other than the water in the sump which we know will fluctuate) holding down the plywood, it will probably help keep the liner from floating up if you do get water flooding under the liner.

Actually for the below grade stuff, perhaps concrete board would be more appropriate as it wouldn't need the plastic under it and it won't rot though it can crack if there are pressure points under it and a load on top.

Good idea... cement fibre sheeting, as you say, for below ground situations.
less likely to float :cyclopsani:

the cement board sounds like the deal..... Im assuming that the cement board is the same
board that you use under tile?
