Did a water test this evening again.

pH 7.8
Ammonia still 1.
Nitrite 0.

No feeding again? If so, it would be 48hrs without food. Is that okay for the fishes?

Sorry did not include the temp in the previous post - 14degC.

Creative1, you reckon I should feed them even if according to the ammonia chart, the ammonia level is just right at the edge of being bad for the fishes??

I'd feed them as well... you've got a little room to move... this chart included in the latest BYAP magazine (issue #5)... shows it better..

Thanks Rupe. I go feed them now.

The nitrite seems to be taking a while to show up on the system. Does the ammonia levels impact on how fast the nitrite producing bacteria grows?

It's more the pH and temperature impacts on the nitrite bacteria growing... although recent research suggests that both the nitrite and nitrate bacterias will only really begin to show up.. when/as the ammonia begins to fall...

Did another test today.

pH 7.8
Ammonia - looks slightly darker than 1 but not 2.
Nitrite - 0
Temp 13 degC.

Nothing seems to be happening with the nitrite production.
Had at least 0.25 of ammonia reading from a week ago, and have been going up over the week,
but the nitrite reading is still 0.

Read in the forum under Useful information that phosphorus is important for nitrifying bateria growth and about phosphate block. Could this be happening with my system? Does Nitrosomonas require phosphorus to grow?
Or am I just impatient?

It's winter Ivan... your tank temp is 13... patience...

Nitrites/Nitrates wont show until the ammonia begins to drop..

Alright Rupe. I should probably go hibernate while the bacteria grows.
Maybe start thinking about 2nd System with CHIFT PIST?

No Ivan... you should already be past the "thinking" stage for system two...

You should in fact be finalising the planning and procurement stages in readiness for actually building it...
