I've started on my second system over the weekend, this time I will be going with a CHIFT PIST set-up.

The components are as follows:
Fish tank 1000 litre IBC
Sump tank 1000 litre IBC cut down to 700 litres
2 bath tubs for grow beds if my calculations are correct they are about 290 litres each
1 blue barrel cut length ways to give 2 100 litre grow beds, one of these will be for duckweed.
Looking at expanded clay for this set-up, the cost is a little hurtful but I figure the bathtub weigh enough without adding the weight of gravel to any stand they're on. The other option is a bed with gravel at the bottom and expanded clay at the top.

The grow beds will get basic stand pipes like by first system, so it will be a 15 flood cycle with a 40-45 minute slow drain. It is working well with what I have so I figure why change.

This system will be put onto a raised area 200mm with the sump going in at the ground level and the fish tank 200mm higher again. This should allow enough for the overflow from the fish tank and the return to the sump to function.

So far I've cut the tops off both IBC's and roughly positioned all the components on the ground to get a feel for how it will look.

I'll add some photos of the bed layout later today as well as my crude Google sketch of what I want to achieve.

All going well I should end up with something like this.

Image

Cut my barrels in half today, think I'll go with 3 bath tubs and 3 half barrels.

I have made a little progress on my second system, not as much as I would have liked though.

The sleeper wall to hold in all the crusher dust that the system will sit on is nearly complete, as is the hole for the sump tank.

The following photos are of the progress so far.

A quick update

Done the base area and fitted the sump tank
Image

The duckweed tank frame has been done for the blue barrel, still need to add the stand pipe.
Image

I've used a flat strap that looks like it's galvanised, will this cause me any problems?
Image

Also test fitted the first arch for the shade cover.
Image

Hope to get the frames for the grow beds done in a couple of weeks.

Fittings for the grow beds, still not sure on the set-up whether it will be siphons or stand pipes.

The barrels, these will get hydroton or similar to reduce weight.

Looking good. Please keep the up-dates coming. :thumbright:

The only problem with this forum is every time I think I have my new system worked out in my head I see another option and I have to start again!

Really like how yours is laid out and it would fit nicely in my back yard.

At this rate I will never get the new system built!! :D

Been working on my system today, the 25mm threaded fittings don't allow for a lot of leeway in the bathtubs. So I cut the bottoms out of some old pots and made a spacer to try and centre everything.

The 50mm to 24mm reducer is different from the one Affan uses, I'm goin to try and find one with a taper like his.

Hi LV,
From my experiments with plastic bottles and Affnan siphons it doesn't really matter what the funnel is like as long as there is some sort of funnel effect.

Have a look at my thread below 'Backyard Affnan Style Siphon'

Also today I made one out of a small Coke bottle and a 1.5l water bottle in about 5min flat. Will put up a video soon about that one.

Thanks Decal, I'll check it out.

The bathtubs had some chips in the enamel so I smeared silicon over the area.

I ordered my pump today, went for a Hozelock Cascade 4000 Submersible Pond Pump. Just got to wait for it to be posted now.

Buried the conduit last weekend and set up an old space case for the back-up battery, air pump and power points. Also added the drain piping to the bath tubs, another trip to Bunnings is in order for some more bits and pieces.

Hopefully it'll be at cycling stage in a couple of weeks.
