So theres plenty of seedlings thats going into the system very soon.

After 2 days the fish havent eaten much - still pissed of with me I think, though they do come to "have a look" at the surface.

Still concerned abput PH and ammonia. Going out today to get a test kit as Im in Cairns for the night. When I get home, ill do a small water change to be safe...

I have been spiking the system though for 2 months before hand though.

Question: How much water should I change? Keeping in mind its chlorinated water I have to put into the tank?

At the moment I have 1000Lt water and 17 * 600/700g Jade Perch.

I will be loosing 5 Jades to my brother in law, and that will leave me with 12 - which is what I want. For more later, ill be adding redclaw.

I do have 4 * 100Ltrs of grow beds presently too. How do you think the number stack up?

So to check my numbers...

100Ltr water + 6kg fish = 200Lt growbed

therefore

1000Ltr water + 60kg fish = 2000 Ltr growbed

therefore

1000Ltr water + 10kg fish = 2000/6 = 333Ltrs growbed

I have 400Ltrs of growbed space presently...

SO as long as I can get the water/ph/ammonia/bacteria balenced asap...
I should have enough growbeds yes?

you'll have to cage off the bottom of the tank to keep the redclaw safe from the perch

Ok an update. I went and got a water test kit today (Monday) and the fish have been in there since lunch time Saturday. So 10kg fish in a 1000ltr container...

PH: 7.0 - 7.2
Ammonia: 0.50 mg/L
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 5.0 mg/L

Oh BTW: in the pics - That 150mm pipe thats on the bottom of the IBC. So check the size of the fish up against it!

:rr:

hey mcphro, nice work!
is it possible that your GB volume isn't enough for the FT? i'm shooting at the ammonia level(0,5mg/l is not much though), but my readings show me less then 0,25 mg/l, close to 0

cos i'm aiming at 50 kg of fish /1000 L at my big system an you raised my eyebrow with those 10kg/1000L, what do you think?

i just noticed a few nice big chillies under the fluoro lights in my aquarium and i just succesfully introduced a lady bug to eat the aphids on the basil...what i'm trying to say is that it's just pure joy to work with ap and i'm happy to see your progress too

have a great day!

Hi Macca,

System is looking good. One word of advice for you regarding the blue barrels. I am using the same things, and I found that they will keep spreading. I can see in one of your photos that at least one of them is spreading.

Mine kept on spreading until they eventually started to overflow. In the end I had to make brackets around them to keep them in shape.

Here are some of the photos of what I had to do with mine. You might be able to come up with a better solution. I scavenged some disposable pallets and used that wood to keep it on the cheap.

My solution to the expanding barrels

Thanks for the reply. I think that the fish have only been in there for 2.5 days. Im glad they are not all dead though, stress (breathing faster), instant 17 large fish to 1000 Ltrs - I thought the ammonia would be much higher..

Keep in mind the water in the system is at least 2 months old, and I did have a redclaw in there for 1 week at some stage. In the 2 months, I have also spiked my water 3 times now with water from my brothers system (i tested his water today and he has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10 nitrates) so im just waiting to see the ammonia level rise.... I want to see if the nitrite/ nitrate rises too....

Once the system is established, I have a NFT idea for my system as well... lots of plans... and not enough Nitrates ... oh bother
