Lots of digging there. Good job! What camera/software did you use for the time lapse video?

Its been quite a wekend! A long one!

Find the project in details here:
http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9056

On sunday I invited some friends to help digging. The goal was to digg out the pit and make the concrete basement. And last but not least its a community building event. We are close friends for over 15 years, danced together at Hajdú Folkdance esemble (http://www.hajdufolk.hu) To rent an excavator ad 3 professional worker is probably cheaper, they make more accurate work, but being together, working together having a good time is priceless.

So we did the digging and the concrete basement, and had a good time afterwards at my place ;)

Next weeken is for masonry work!

It has one major weakness: It can upload pictures via ftp only when it detects motion, and cant upload pictures by interval. So to make make a picture every minute is a rather complicated. You need to configurate a dynamic dns, let incomiming calls thrue your router, and got have a webserver running a cron job every minute. ;)

Its an indoor camera but I will move it outside for better view and picture quality.

I was looking forward a bit and there are some unanswered questions.

Wels catfish /europena catfish (Silurus glanis)

I read a lot of studies about keeping wels in tanks, and think that i might get away with that. I know that they grow fine on trouth feed in the first few month. But i'm still missing knowledge by experiance. Do you know anyone that tried wels in aquaponics, or at least an aquarium? Any comments are welcome! Fishfeed, density, habit, issues, problems, thing...

Catfish like worms, its clear to me :thumbright:

I would be more than happy if the bottom of my tank would look like this in a few month...

They are nice, ancient looking fish, I love tham ;)

I cant wait for sunday... when ist masonry time!

Thanks for the pics and video! The catfish appear to like crowding. As long as they grow on prepared feed they should be a good choice. Not sure if canabalism is an issue, keep the size consistent to prevent it.

Catfish can really grow big. Current hungarian record is 227 cm /almost 7,5 ft with 112kg-s.
Those monsters are at least 30 years old. You can even catch bigger ones mostly in regions where its not native (France, Spain, Italy, Kazahstan)

This one was hooked in Kazahstan.

- Wels like crouding :thumbright:
- Cannibalism is not an issue :thumbright:
- They eat variously, worms, snails, larves, yabbies, frogs, mouse, rats, (Yes, mouse, and rats can swim, and they regularly try swimming to the other side of a river.). Bigger wels even catch ducks and other small water birds. They have big mouth but they prefer smaller fish, studies show that they wont catch fish bigger than 1/8 of their own size. Wels is a side product of local carp fisheries (lakes). They keep tham to catch smaller, un wanted herbivorous fish, and for sport fishing. :thumbright:
- Groth rate depends on water temperature. 25 C (77F) is the best for tham, over 20C (68F) is fine but they survive and even feed at 5C (41F) /growth rate is 10% of the ideal/. Their market size is 1,2+ kgs, which they naturaly reach in 2 years, but in tanks its can be reducerd to 9 month, because of ideal temperature. :thumbright:
- Wels likes to lean on the bottom, and digs holes, i might have to add some gravel to the fish tank. :dontknow:
- They should be omnivorous, but definitely on carnivorous side, they do eat pellets where fish oil is replaced with vegetable oil. I may try to make a mix of duckweed and larves for tham and see what happends. I need to get more information on feeding. Daily feeding rate is a question too! (Sturies show wide dispersion here.) :dontknow:

Seems like Im on a pioneers path with wels...

Im lucky to have friends like tham. Moveing sby to a new place, bigger gardennig projects, building projects normally turn to community events like. We help each other, and make a good time. We are used to these kind of things, you dont really need to manage it, just give tham a target, and everybody finds its place... inteligent people 8)

Simple rools for long terms:
- If you help me, I will help you back when you need it! Help has to be helped back, its not exchangable to anythig else.
- If you are the host, give tham tools, a target, feed and soak tham well.

Round here we call it "swings and roundabouts", what goes around comes around. It's a very good policy. :thumbright:
