My end goal for AP fish is koi fish. however as start up I am thinking of having catfish and/or janitor fish. They are omnivorous and I will have no problem feeding them fruit and veggie leftovers and other kitchen leftovers. I dont want to feed my system store bought chemicals if I can help as my AP is basically to avoid the chemical and fertilizer grown veggies that seems to be the only available choice locally.

My question is. will koi do good in AP?

I have seen several videos of commercial sized systems that had a percentage of Koi. Yes

I hear they don't like to stay above 85deg water for too long though. But can survive something like 90deg or 95degF for short durations. That you don't want to feed them above 85. They need more oxygen when they eat.

I just got my first Koi. I will have to wait and see. It is hot where I live.

Thanks Marty, will look forward to your feedback. A friend has a commercial size koi culture he is selling koi to aquarium enthusiast. Its pricey here on the other hand fish for food is cheap. I'm in the Philippines:). Its 81 deg here and its a cloudy day.

So far I had one of the two Kio commit suicide. I thought I covered the tank well but there are some small 1.5" gaps at the back corners.

So far the actual temps here have been mid 90s with a heat index of around 110. The calmer Koi. Seems fine. Covering the remaining gaps and getting some more Koi. My wife and kids Really want just goldfish and Koi. So I may go that route for this small system.

I read last night that Koi will often jump to explore new ponds.

I also read that Channel Cats die off at around 100deg.

I want to build a greenhouse and build a large system in about 5years. That one is growing food fish.

Here is my thread. You can follow there...

I have 6 koi in our system for 2.5 months and they are doing well.
Still very shy but nice looking fish. The biggest is around 55 cm long.

We have them in a separate system, so maybe others will know?

Not the best picture, but here are the koi in their own tank.

Because you see a white one?
Those are a type of koi. Don't know which one though. They are 5 years old according to the previous owner.

I was on a koi forum a few days ago. I read that in the right conditions a koi will usually live 20 to 60 years... and that the record holder died at something like 225 years.

Their colors can get darker or lighter as they age or due to nutrition. But they keep their patterns and colors from what I understand.

I have read the same.
As I was given those koi, I have no idea what type they are.
It isn't easy to identify them as they are not those "expensive" one with striking colors.
Doesn't matter to do me as long as they provide food for my plants and they are beautiful in their own way.

Hi guys

I've just joined the forum plus have just set up my little system (300 litre fish tank) a few days ago. Haven't got any fish yet but my choice will be butterfly kio. They look so majestic!!

Do kio go ok with a little swirl current as my tank is round? My concern is I don't want to exhaust the little buggers

The water in my tank swirls slowly every time a bed drains. They seem to enjoy it. My butterfly fingering seems to be the most energetic of my three koi. I have seen it skip across the water surface at feeding time.
