Got mine from Fremantle Challenger Institute (TAFE) about a month ago. Size wasn't too big and affordable... unfortunately I read on the forum here that someone called recently and they have ran out of good sized ones...

Same problem last year when the trouts came out, there was a sudden mad rush for barra. So it was a bit of a grab what you can scenario, so with a few different systems, I figured I will get them earlier and avoid the rush...

I've not grown barra before. is there any point getting 3-5cm fingerlings now, or will they not grow out by the end of the season?

Na, they will not be grown out to any decent size by the end of season.

Thanks Earthbound,

So, am I right that if i want barra i'm pretty much limited to the 12-15cm ones at GP for $6.50? (i think that's what they said when i phoned on Friday - can't recall for sure. And assuming that they will still be available come the weekend (I will order of course)

The only other option I can think of is SP, but I actually have some of those in the sump tank from last year. They barely show any interest and food and ar still pretty tiny. The only food they ever really showed much interest in was maggots.

thanks

Dazed IMO try and get some barra from the same place EB did, i think details are on the BYAP thread in announcements? GP pull their barra out of the breed tanks on mondays, and so by the W/E only sick ones are left and theyve been in display tanks which arnt the greatest conditions for a week or so. or you could go for some SP, they will start eating more as the weather warms :)

Thanks Ben,

is that the place in Bedfordale mentioned at the top of this thread? I couldn't see anything recent in the announcements thread. It sounds like i'll have to rule GP out because I doubt i'll manage a monday for quite a while.

btw The silvers are just recently starting to show a little more interest in food, but only a little. I think the largest ones are not much over 12cm.

cheers
dave

Well it is changeover time here at the display centre. The weeks high temperatures signalled "trout harvest"
Today we received the new arrivals "the big barra" around 88og each, more than plate size, yummee! We setlled them in and Tania recited some reassuring words to them as they huddled together unsure of their new surroundings "there isn't a bqq anywhere here, na uh, she told them."

The barramundi came from Bedfordale and at that size I reckon it isn't bad. Last year large barramundi cost $15-00 per kilo and this works out to $18-75 per kilo. Of course you don't need as many and you don't have to wait for them to grow before you start harvesting and impressing your friends. the contact phone number is 0412474746 for anyone who is interested.

Gigi has silvers, see my thread for details

Yeah, if you check the mobile number they are the same... I would go with the Bedfordale guy... I have bought from GP before and also seen the Bedfordale setup... IMO, the Bedfordale is more aquaculture setup than GP...
