I'm planning on using the wood heater and insulation to warm the room (where the tanks are housed) rather than heating the water itself. I think this way is much more efficient but only time will tell.

Your going to spend alot of time loading the fire each day, ever thought of a pellet stove? they were the heating of choice when I was in Maine, USA.
You load the hopper behind the unit with the pellets and it practically runs itself, you just dial in the temp you want.
The pellets were real cheap and you get them by the pallet, saves cutting wood etc but the only downfall is the auger that feeds the fire box is run off mains electricity.

I think it depends on how good your insulation is as to how often you have to light up the fire. Im talking aquaculture tanks here so I dont have to worry about losing heat thru the growbeds.

In regards to your system, not sure... what are your other water test results?

my water results are 7.2 from the bore and in system 7.8 palnts were tomato,brocolli and lettuce which are poor showing the system sits in a shade house I reckon the cloth could be 70-80% not sure but at the moment are feeding 1 a day and housing some sp 4 goldfish and the young bloke put in a marron.

Had the pleasure of meeting TonyAbalone this morning, and he was kind enough to show me all that Challenger Tafe had to offer with a cooks tour - highly recommended! The kingfish broodstock are amazing - like torpedoes!

Anyway - grabbed my 100mm barra. They are now $1.80 each and they have about 600 left to sell - SO -

GET DOWN TO FREO TAFE N BUY YOUR BARRA ASAP!

They aren't monsters, but if your got a well-established system you can ram 'em with food quick enough and you should be able to get some meat off the bones come Easter next year!

The mulloway were incredible - I aint ever seen mulloway like that. The monster Swan River mulloway are prolly a thing of the past ...

I hope to get the time to go down to bedfordale tomorrow to get a few barra (up to 10) for christmas. I may not have many more opportunities (new baby due soon). The only container I have handy is a 70L esky (36cm deep, 50cm long). Will that be big enough for any plate size barra at all? If so how many? If not, what size esky would I need? I do have aerators. Will need to get the fish from Bedfordale to Toodyay.

Hi Dazed,
The fish are big and a 36 litre esky will not give them much room to move. I think they would be stressed with a trip to Toodyay. You will cewrtainly need an air pump to be safe, having not done too much fish transport not sure how much space you need, sorry :dontknow:

It will help them if you add salt to their transport water as it helps to activate their slime coat, a fish defence mechanism. At leat 3ppt.
