Hi, this is my first post so I hope I'm doing this right. I have what I believe to be a Mozambique tilapia/Goldfish hybrid. I have both fish species in a small aquaponics pond in my backyard. I was trying to fish out some female tilapia to add to a breeder tank when I caught one that I initially thought was just a tilapia because of the coloring, but then on closer examination its head and fins are shaped much more like a goldfish. Its definitely not a tilapia, but I don't think it's just a brown colored goldfish.

I did some research and found that there are carp/goldfish hybrids, but tilapia are cichlids and I have not found any cichlid/goldfish or tilapia/goldfish hybrid references.

Has this happened to anyone else? And do the hybrids have any good qualities are is it just bad to breed these species together?

Any help would be great, thanks!

Also, I can post pictures soon.

Goldfish and carp can hybridize because they are both in the carp family. Cyprinids and cichlids hybrids are doubtful. It is most likely a goldfish that has reverted back to the wild look.
