Anyone know of anywhere you can get blackfish fingerlings from?

There was a guy out west that was doing them 6 years ago or so but the trout shut his operation down and he didn't get started again (AFAIK) when the water came back.

But you are right that might be my best bet.

Gadopsis marmoratus, is known as Blackfish or marbled river cod. It's native to victoria and tasmania and has small populations in NSW and SA. Their range has deminished with large scale farming and urbanization.

Anyone who does know anyone breeding or keeping them, please let me know.

Stuart Chigwell. Since you are in Lyonville, there is a little creek down from the Wickham Track at Glenlyon with abundant young blackfish (the creek is only about 1m. wide and half m. deep, but I don't know it's name). Small hook and worm works well. I think they would be the northern race of blackfish though, which are much smaller than the southern race from say, the Otways.
The strange thing about Blackfish is that they move almost not at all from their stretch of river (only 40 to 50 metres in their lifetime, so are very easy to wipe out in certain areas of a stream....ie. spread the load.
The young spend most of their life hiding under leaf litter (boring), are ambush predators and are closely related to Murray Cod, so possibly share the MC's aggression to other fish nearby.
They are delicious eating, but I suspect also slow growing.

Are you sure they are not Galaxids?

In the other direction there are Blackfish in the Lerdederg but I don't like fishing for them given how badly they have been over fished.

Hi Stuart,
I cycled my systems on common galaxias, and the fish in the creek were not galaxias.
Yes Boss, I agree, that fish in your photo looks pretty good.
