It does work (so I've heard). This is commonly used for black soldier fly larvae (BSF) where usually a protein source like meat is embedded between layers of leaves (to reduce the smell) and the resulting maggots exit the bucket and fall into the water. It's on my to-do list though it is not yet near the top.

It's an old fishermans trick to hang a dead rabbit or possum over a stretch of river that you want to fish in a week or so. The carcase gets flyblown and trout are just hanging around underneath waiting for the maggots to supply them with an easy meal. Then along comes a gent with a hook and voile....trout for dinner!
