check p 37. I reckon it looks like red spot disease.

or a couple of pages further in... could be columnaris which is a bacterial infection... same a for humans bacterial infections need antibiotics... and in aquaculture pathogenic infections such as what cause red spot disease require formalin to kill the pathogen. As with any fish health issue, salt will help by reducing the instance of fungal secondary infections.

First thought as well Monya.... and haemorraging lesions would indicate that posibility...

But the very definite "ulcer" pictured... is more likely Aeromonas salmonicida ...goldfish ulcer disease... "GUD"...

Have a look here.... http://www.daff.gov.au/animal-plant-hea ... al_strains

it looks terrible whatever it is. would a disease like this come from the hatchery Rupe? If so they might need a phone call and let them know.

Thanks Monya, I've had a read thru those sections, they do seem grim, don't they. I'm now of the opinion of removing the fish, ridding the system of the infection and starting over. Would love to know where the disease started. Also would love to hear opinions on how to rid the system of the disease. Am considering Rups salting at 6ppt and Condes at 2ppt for a ftn, hoping to keep the veggies and gravel for "Mattquaponics Take 2".

Where did you get the fish from Matt? You should contact them especially if you never had any other fish in your system

these are my first fish. they were purchased from a fishy dealer north sunshine coast. I'll be contacting them first thing next week. is there any other way they might have caught this disease?? Water always from a tank? 2 different gravel supplies??

Can anyone recommend how to sterilise this system now?

Chlorine. I would use the rates recommended for Mycobacteria on page 46 as without laboratory testing you dont know what you are dealing with here.

Sorry for the thread revival, just thought I'd check in and see how you got on with this?

Dangerous Dave, this could be relevant for you

If I am salting my whole system at 6ppt for a 3000 litre system I would be needing 18kgs of salt? And with the Condes Crystals at 2ppm I would be looking at 60grams for the 3000 litres? Does that sound right or am I still failing math?

I've never been awesome at maths, but wouldn't 60gm for 3000lt be way too much? Woukd be more like 20ppm right?

I reckon your maths is good Loser.

Well spotted... good to know we might have some solutions for our problem.

My fish look OK for now. If further problems, will start with increasing salt before going the Condy's crystals route.

Hope yours hang in there. Salt seems to be working, so that's a win.

Glad I double checked those calculations, otherwise I'd have a few more dead ones here this more.

I put in 2ppm of potassium permanganate last night.
Figured it's my only option. Bio load is pretty small at the moment, so if it takes the good bacteria in the beds a while to grow back, it shouldn't matter too much.

One dead one this morning, but with the injury he's already got, I doubt he would have made it anyway.

Yep, those are ribs sticking out. Pretty shit way to go. Hopefully these condys crystals zap whatever nasties are lurking around.
