We always get asked, can you grow carrots in an aquaponics system and wil they be straight. The answer is that you can grow just about anything, but some things grow better than others. Here is a carrot that was growing here in the Outback system and began to push itself out of the bed, and what a little surpise it was too.

Rainbow chard
Cos lettace
Boc choy
Ruby chard
Spring onions
Beetroot ( Bulls Blood )
Peas
Corriander
Sweet basil
Lemon basil
Thai basil
Rubarb
Radish (French breakfast )
All have done very well in our system which is in full sun till about 3:30 pm. I do have shade cloth above the plant beds for relief from the summer sun and that is removed in cooler times.

Sorry that it is not a very pretty picture but never the less, these carrots were pulled from the bed grown in straight "blue metal" (granite) Who woulda thought that was even possible, not bad huh?

wow in that heavy stuff? kinda explains why they're so short... unless that's the variety. I'm just surprised that they still grew, since they have such a bad rep for being so fussy about the size of the silt they grow in.

You must have strange granite over there Faye! Granite is normally gray - pink with mottled appearance and plenty of quartz. Blue metal is generally basalt in Australia, fine grained dark coloured rock with fairly uniform appearance. In the UK I believe mudstone is referred to as blue metal.

Have you used dipel yet Murray - if not I would strongly recommend it for grubs.

I will give the lebanese cucumbers another go sometime. Maybe my problem has been a once off - mind you every one of the platns has the same stem splitting problem.

I have that in an apricot tree (7 months)
Just support the plant until it can hold its self

cellery works very well, buy one at the store and cut off about an inch and put it in the bed so it gets wet when it cycles.
