why grow fish or veges? you can buy both cheaper than your running costs.....

Yes you are right, and so you make ALL your own fish food, for that same reason, we assume.. and build your own Air-Pumps etc.
EVERYTHING has a COST, and $150 for a Kg of powder is likely cheap, and then again - you could buy the overseas stuff, that is suggested as being non-organic, as I doubt that would make a big difference to fish etc.

umm because its going to cost less then $7 per kg to grow ...
and how are you paying $150 its like $30 / kg ( tho that's fish grade ) ...

and I already used to grow the stuff a decade ago for raising fry
this time around mostly doing it for human consumption , feeding fish is the bonus

Agreed... BUT - The only supplier (other than CSIRO) will not sell me any without a permit, so the point is - You LIKELY can never import it or buy it..

After all, every other person MAY have KOI, but NO-ONE has admitted having Spirulina.. so it does not fall into the same category as Koi..

It's a rare person who want's to culture Spirulina... I am unsure that I would want to, even if a culture could be found..


So - we KNOW that imports are being blocked, suggesting that the comment about growing it being illegal, is correct.. and you are going to sell on EBAY.. now that is bright..

Import it from five suppliers, and one might get through, and I do hope that there is ONLY Spirulina in the culture and no more noxious green stuff, if you plan to also consume it .. and with four being confiscated, they will likely look at who had ordered the illegal stuff..

its unlikely that its "illegal" in the same way as cocaine, i think customs would treat the shipments like most things that are legal to have, but has dubious status - like brugmansia, HBWR seeds, etc - they will stop them and destroy them, but go no further because you may not have been allowed to bring it in,, etc, but its not actualy an illegal substance.

honestly I'm not hiding where my food grade photobioreactor will be placed .. but its going to live on the bottom of my pool

for two reasons
#1 large body of water will have a stable temperature
#2 I needed the body of water to be inhabitable anyhow Chlorine does this best

pool can absorb the sun's heat and allow the light into the culture with out the culture being boiled

I'm already starting some Arduino code for controlling the culture to keep stable temperature co2/nutrient doses and automatic harvesting when target density is reached

Look at the cover photo in DARWIN, where I would be confident that heat was a significant issue..
I would have thought that heat and intense sunlight, was a basic need..
I would be confident that the light at the bottom of a typical pool, would be somewhat down on the surface insolation..

All pretty cool that you can go to the trouble..

We need to buy a UAV with a bottle dangling under and go to DARWIN for a holiday..

you do know Spirulina are dead @ 39 C ... heat is a concern especially when my room temps are 40+
its 9pm and this room is between 41 and 42 think it reached 45 today
yet the water feels nice and cool
memo building a tall house with no tree's in site = bad idea

manufacture plants only heat their product to 50 deg to deactivate the cultures

and it's not really a problem or concern for me ,
can anyone actually point to a place that lists all illegal things in AU ?
the pool will pay for itself now , can not wait to have heated pool in winter

I have built up a couple of nutrient grow packs for spirulina now
ranging from basic containing only 5 ingredients ( fish food )
to over 30 and counting ( human consumption )
I am building up my own personal use one tablespoon a day formula for my own personal use

anyhow enough with the bickering , my next reply will be to notify when I am starting the culture followed by another reply when I have enough stock for shipping plus final prices of culture nutrients

I hear your words.. and appreciate the thoughts, but I know the Darwin product, and have used it personally for years.
And I see those photos of their production and wonder why it is so completely opposite to what you say...

When this tread started I went out and got live spriulina from a health food store it was a liquid on the fridge. The pet shop has alive culture going that they use to feed Koi. Hope this helps.

how do you mean its the opposite?

they have large ponds, you do know that lare bodies of water in the tropics dont get higher than about 30c and generally dont drop much from that yea?

I have spirulina growing. We got our culture from amazon.com. We grow it in a fish tank in the kitchen and harvest some for our own use, and our chickens, fresh each day. We are about to start an aquaponics system. We'll feed it to the fish then as well.

I don't know how to PM but if you are interested in some just get in touch. Certainly won't cost as much as CSIRO or the hideous exchange rates if buying from overseas.

I bought it from Algae Research Supplies on Amazon. Exchange rate is a killer!!
