I currently have a small kitchen herb aquaponics setup with a Beta fish. I've grown wheat grass and sprouts no problem, my issue is when I try to grow something with small seeds like basil. I have the basket setup with pumice rock for the medium, but the basil seeds fall right out. I've tried rubber banding a cheese cloth around the basket which does work however the cheese cloth becomes slimy. I then tried to transplant a basil plant from soil to the aquaponics system but it did not last. So here I am looking for some advice on growing small seed herbs in a aquaponics system that has baskets.

Thanks in advance for the help!
-Matt

A couple of things you could try - dampen the media in the basket before adding the seeds - the surface tension should help hold the seeds in place. Option 2 - Try starting the seeds on a piece of paper towel then move this to the system, paper towel section and all..

try something a little less coarse for your media. can put it into centre-top of the pumice.
depending on size variability filter your pumice to get some smaller bits.

else try something like small piece of rock wool or plastic-foam just big enough to hold the seed in place.
