Hi all,

Have a question about lettuce. It's kinda off topic as it wasn't grown in an aquaponic system... It was grown hydroponically.

My question is the lettuce grew a solid stalk, but it grew tall. I have heard a tall plant is due to it looking for more daylight. It received about 4 hours of solid Florida sun a day

I have started a new batch of butter head lettuce from seeds which I am terrible at starting from seeds but you can't learn if you don't try. As the seeds sprout and grow there first set of leaves I will transplant them into my hydroponic system as my aquaponic system is still gathering components. This time I will be moving the grow system into about 5 hours of sun a day.

Some lettuce varieties don't grow so well in summer tending to bolt and grow tall.

Judging from the temps that my dad has been complaining about... you're probably already too warm to grow lettuce that heads up properly without shade cloth. My dad is in Lakeland which is a bit north from you and he's already been complaining about 80 degree days...

I don't think your issue is lack of sun. I grow lettuce year round in Michigan and we get far less than 4 hours of light during the days of winter... (but summer time it bolts quickly and we max out 80's-90's as highs, cooler nights though) the issue is most likely the temperature being too hot already. Move to shade / add 50+% shade cloth... lettuce doesn't need much sun to grow if I can grow it through the winter.
